Hello all -

I am still in my country, but my POE is set for about 2 weeks from now and I am trying to make sure I bring the relevant docs for AOS - I know i have to bring a birth certificate in English and my country offers an international, translated version. However, some people at the office here told me to get it apostilled, while others told me I dont have to do that.

Is that really a requirement? Does anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

When we got our birth certificate translated they stamped the back with a certification stamp of the company. We used this for the initial K1 process and AOS and it seems to be good so far.

According to the requirements i believe it HAS to be from a certificated agency..

As long as you have your original birth certificate, the translation can be self-translated as long as you are competent in the English language to be able to make an accurate translation.

My daughter-in-law self-translated and self-certified her Portuguese original birth certificate for her I-129f translation with no problems(and we have used the same for her AOS)

Here is the requirement direct from the USCIS website: Translations. Any foreign language document must be accompanied by a full English translation that the translator has certified as complete and correct, and by the translator's certification that he or she is competent to translate the foreign language into English. http://www.uscis.gov/forms/forms-and-fees/general-tips-assembling-applications-mailing

Please submit certified translations for all foreign language documents. The translator must certify that s/he is competent to translate and that the translation is accurate.

The certification format should include the certifier's name, signature, address, and date of certification. A suggested format is:

Certification by Translator

I [typed name], certify that I am fluent (conversant) in the English and ________ languages, and that the above/attached document is an accurate translation of the document attached entitled ______________________________.

I did it by myself.

When I filed K1 visa and this time for AOS.

I typed it into Excel and printed it out. Then sign name and date with a pen.

There was no problem!

Good luck.

interesting info, thank you!

it is already in English, so no need to translate it, the way they do it, is they issue it in 10 different languages all at once, so the idea is that I should be able to use it anywhere in the world. I was just wondering if it is recogniced by USCIS as the valid document it is... It has got the stamp from our local office and stuff, but this process has been making me paranoid ;-)

I might just do the apostille, it doesnt cost anything other than time :-D

Yep it doesn't look like the biometrics appointment updates the status online. I think the next update will be when your EAD/AP combo card has been approved and when the card goes into production/mailed out.
