USCIS District Director advises Canadian applicants awaiting passport renewals to attend previously scheduled USCIS interviews

My wife's Canadian passport was set to expire in June of this year, so we submitted it for a renewal on January 9th. Although we were fully expecting the passport crunch caused by the new passport requirements, there was no way for her to renew it prior to January as she was constantly traveling and had to have the passport on her. Prior to the submission, we checked on the status of her AOS application and were told that it was still at NBC, that Atlanta's DO was backed up and that the interview would probably not take place until April. Since she will once again need to travel in May and will require the Canadian passport to do so, we submitted it for a renewal.

As you can tell from out timeline, her interview invitation arrived a few days later and set March 20th as the interview date. Although there is still a very good chance that she'll receive the new passport prior to the interview, we decided to have a contingency plan in place and contacted our local Canadian consulate yesterday in an effort to expedite the passport processing. The consular official just left us a message stating that she has contacted the USCIS district director in Atlanta regarding the situation and that he has advised her that USCIS is well aware of the Canadian passport delays and has made arrangements for passport-less Canadians to attend their previously scheduled USCIS interviews. According to the message, the district director has assured the Canadian consular official that the absence of the passport will not cause any problems at the interview, will not necessitate its rescheduling and that post interview USCIS will stamp the new passport as soon as we receive it and bring it in.

I thought I'd share these news with the rest of the forum, in case other people find themselves in a similar predicament.

8/16/06 Overnighted AOS and AP applications (no EAD, since I won't need it until next year).

8/17/06 Delivered at 12:44pm (Chicago lockbox).

8/24/06 All 3 checks cashed.

8/26/06 Received NOA. I485, I130 and I131 are online.

8/29/06 All 3 touched.

9/2/06 Biometrics appointment received.

9/5/06 I130 and I131 touched.

9/8/06 Biometrics completed.

9/8/06 I485 touched.

9/11/06 I485 touched.

11/14/06 AP approved.

11/15/06 AP touched.

11/20/06 AP received.

12/21/06 Confirmed that the name check has cleared.

1/5/07 I-765 (EAD) mailed out by certified mail (no rush).

1/10/07 I-765 delivered at 9:46am (Chicago lockbox).

1/16/07 Received NOA1 for I-765 (dated 1/10/07).

1/16/07 I-765 touched.

1/18/07 I-765 touched.

1/20/07 Biometrics scheduled for 1/31/07 (which I already completed on 9/8/06).

1/20/07 Interview scheduled for 3/20/07 at 8:00am.

1/20/07 I-765 touched (they're open on Saturdays?).

1/31/07 Biometrics for I-765 completed.

1/31/07 I-765 touched.

2/1/07 I-765 touched.

2/28/07 I-485 and I-130 touched.

3/1/07 I-485 and I-130 touched.

3/20/07 AOS interview. Approved.

A bump for those who might be in a similar situation.

Wow... thanks so much for sharing as I was just panicking about a similar predicament. I have to submit forward the packet 3 stuff to the Montreal consulate so they can get started with me and my K3. I will include a note that I'll be renewing my passport and hope they will be understanding and not reject me!!
