As everyone knows Vietnamese ladies keep maiden name when they get married so their passport never changes to their husband's surname.

So has anyone's wife changed their name to their husband's name after they received their green card? If so how does one do this? I know it can be done after naturalization but since one needs to travel on their Vietnamese passport the green card must have the same name or is it as simple as just keeping her name as is and adding on the surname that way its easily identified hey - its the same person.

If so any issues with foreign travel. The only reason I ask if I can sort the documentation out now for driver license, bank accounts, credit then it will be much easier than having to change it 3yrs down the road when she gets citizenship.

you need to go to court to add smith to her last name. i hired a lawyer to do that for me.

Curious about this myself. The embassy site regarding passport renewals, directions specifically say when filling out application to use her maiden full name too (which makes sense since they wouldn't' really have any record of her new name) but not sure if they'd continue to put that on new passport..etc?

when you go to court to change or add your name. The court will notary the name change on the court document. Send that document when you renewal your passport.

Why do you need to goto court? I thought court changes were for holistic name changes like John Smith to Bubba Gump, not a wife taking her husbands last name.

Remember Vietnamese passport can't be changed. USA passport can be and well that is 3yrs from now. I the meantime she must use her Viet passport.

I figured out how to do at local court which is easy enough. However will one run into issues changing name on the green card traveling on her Viet passport with her maiden name? All we will be doing is adding my surname to the end of her name present. I figured easier get all of her ID banking, ect correct now then wait for 3yrs from now.

As for name change you get a freebie during naturalization.

send the passport into the VN consulate with marriage certificate taken the surname of the husband and they will issue her a new passport, or call the VN emabassy in SF or in DC. simple process

Is her last name change on your marriage cert? If not u might wanna do that

zeta054 is giving good advice. I asked my attorney and a court clerk, and both said this is the easy way to do it. Marriage certificate will reflect name change. This is how we are going to do it. Good luck!

We have a Thai Marriage Certificate and it just shows the parties who are marrying, but does say my wife intends to take my surname.

For K1's you can change the name at the time you are married. CR/IR-1 must go to court to change it or wait for naturalization when it can be done along with the oath ceremony.

Hi, I am getting married soon with K1 visa, and i intent to change to husband's surname, is it possible for me to change my name as well? or just surname at the moment? Thank you if any help!
