Teen driver in fiery crash that killed five is charged with manslaughter

he teenage driver involved in a fiery vehicle collision that resulted in the deaths of five juvenile passengers in Irvine last year has been charged in connection with their deaths, authorities said Saturday.

Bradley Morales, who was 16 at the time and the sole survivor of the crash, was taken into custody on Saturday and booked into the Orange County Juvenile Detention Center, authorities said.

He has been charged with five felony counts of gross vehicular manslaughter, driving without a license and failure to show proof of financial responsibility in connection with the Oct. 4, 2014, crash on the 5 Freeway.

"Our investigators took a great deal of time and painstakingly went over this case to ensure a thorough and comprehensive investigation was complete," Capt. R. Shackleford of the California Highway Patrol said in a statement.

Morales, who suffered a serious head injury in the crash, told paramedics who treated him that the group was heading home after a night at Knott's Scary Farm, the popular Halloween theme park at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park.

Authorities said at the time that the driver apparently did not have a license.

In California, motorists younger than 17½ are generally prohibited from driving between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. and aren't allowed to have passengers under 20 years old.

I think the "ban cars/pencils/plastic bags" rationale falls under the category of "routine" responses to gun crime.

It's a clichéd song and dance that says is that mass shootings are somehow trivial and undeserving of attention, concern or action.

Don't you think the "ban weapons" rationale after a murder by a gun falls under the category of non-comprehensive understanding of the root cause? Just as the car did not kill anyone above, neither has a gun. Ever.

If you want to boil the issue down to that, then you are part of the problem. IMO. Burying your head in the sand is what that is. Sure if people want to kill, they will. Why then would you make the tools to do it more efficiently and on a larger scale more readily available?

As I said, it seems to be a routine response to incidents like this to trivialise the issue entirely by relativizing it into meaningless insignificance. Let's not even entertain the idea that mass proliferation of guns in society may make society less safe. Instead, let's throw out as many silly analogies as we can.

What is it about the US that there hasnt been week without a mass shooting so far this year. Obviously there's more to it than guns, but the fact that guns are (comparatively) easily available and this doesn't happen to anything like the same degree in other developed countries.

The rationale "guns don't kill, people do" is a device for completely avoiding any discussion of the gun culture in the United States or the effect it has on society.

You may be new to this forum, relatively speaking, but having seen it as often as I have - you get tired of the same, tired boring old argument.

Sure, you don't want to discuss gun crime. If that's the limit of your interest in the topic, perhaps you should excuse yourself from it.

Actually, the "guns don't kill people" rationale is based on 100% fact, whether in this forum, or anywhere else in the world. People who have never owned a gun, nor been around them much, seem to have an unhealthy fear of them. Sure, they allow a perp some stand-off distance. But guns alone don't kill people. Only a truly dense individual would think that they do, and would think that taking guns away would reduce crime. I am sure you have seen much more of the argument than I have on here, but I have seen it elsewhere, and it's always the same thing. It's a polar topic, to be sure.

But I also have been perusing some old posts on here, trying to get a feel for the local population. Really interesting bunch used to speak their minds here. Seems some have gone away in the recent past. It's too bad, there used to be some interesting dialogue bantering about the ethernet here.
