SSN drama

Pigu arrived Tuesday night (yay!). We went to the local Social Security office yesterday to apply for his SSN and they said he couldn't get it without a work permit and we argued that he could and they said some kinda ####### about "this post 9-1-1 world" and checked with their manager, who said ever since 2005 K1s haven't been able to get SSN without a work permit. So, today he printed out the section from their online operations manual (dated January 2007) that says quite specifically and obviously that K1 class of entry is work authorized automatically (for purposes of getting SSN, not for purposes of actually getting a job) and does not need any other proof of work eligibility besides the visa and K1 I-94. So I've sent him trudging back across town to their office for round two, armed with printouts.

We shall see! I will update! Anyway, thanks VisaJourney forums for having that link to the SSA manual page posted all the time. If it weren't for you guys, I really would have believed when the ladies at the office said he wasn't eligible.

Ha, yeah, he just called. He got it, no problem.

Except they have to wait for homeland security clearance or something, but whatever.

Yay! That's great. Glad you're finally with him!

I thought you had to wait about 2 weeks of being in the US before their name would be in the system, otherwise they'd have to do something manually and it could take even longer. Just something I read somewhere on this site.

He didn't get EAD at POE, nope.

And yeah, I've seen the thing about waiting a couple weeks too. But we were impatient.

There isn't any super pressing need for his SSN right away anyway, so it if gets held up we can go fight some more with the ladies at the SSA office.
