The United States endured yet another mass shooting Thursday afternoon. Information about the shooter was slow to trickle out, but new details give a glimpse into his life.

Chris Harper Mercer, the 26-year-old shooter, opened fire on the campus of Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Reports have confirmed that 10 students were killed, with at least another seven injured. There were originally conflicting reports about the shooter, but MSNBC was able to confirm his identify on the night of Oct. 1. As the night progressed, further information was released, as pointed out by The Raw Story.

The Daily Beast reported that Mercer's Myspace profile was active, noting that he had been living in Torrance, California, before moving to Winchester, Oregon. Pictures of the shooter were present on the site, as were images of the Irish Republican Army, which are armed movements in the country who want Ireland to become an independent republic.

Heavy.com dug even deeper, revealing a profile Mercer set up on a dating site where he identified himself as a "conservative Republican." Mercer went on to list that he wasn't religious, but considered himself to be "spiritual," and was self-identified as "mixed race."

The mass shooting at Umpqua Community College was the 45th in the United States in 2015. President Obama called a press conference following the shooting, criticizing the NRA and members of Congress who continue to remain lackadaisical when it comes to passing common sense gun legislation. Much of the right wing media, including Fox News, responded to the president's comments by claiming he was just using the shooting to avoid other political issues.

At one point in his life, Mercer tagged himself as a Republican on his dating profile. Within hours after the shooting, CBS, Raw Story, Mediate, Heavy, The Daily Beast, and scores of Twitter users pounced all over this apparent revelation.

However, killer Harper-Mercer was not a Republican.
He was registered as an “Independent.”

Not sure what his political lean has to do with the shooting. Does that matter. really? He was half black, too. Does THAT matter? I think a more salient point is that he targeted christians as his victims.

Not sure what his political lean has to do with the shooting. Does that matter. really? He was half black, too. Does THAT matter? I think a more salient point is that he targeted christians as his victims.

Because here, when it's not a black person or a Muslim, the person's political affiliation becomes the target. And him being half black does matter, to those who make it an issue about skin color.

Hate crime, motivated certainly by religion and possibly by race. Certainly a Black on White crime.
