Travelling out of US to renew expired F1 Visa

Hello all! I am currently studying in graduate school in Boston and my F1 visa has just expired. I am thinking of going up to Montreal to get my visa renewed at the Montreal U.S Consulate.

Is it possible to be interviewed on a particular day and receive the F1 renewal on the same day? If my visa renewal is delayed, can I still return to US using a tourist visa? Or will my passport be kept by the US Consulate?

Why do you need a visa if you are in the US?

I'm an international student studying in US. I will be travelling to another country, but my current visa has expired and needs to be renewed for me to reenter US. Any suggestions?

You do not get it the same day, usually a few days later.

They need your passport to put the visa in.

As long as your I-20 is still valid and you are not 'out os status' you shouldn't have any issues renewing your visa.
