Hi all,

Is there anyone experienced bringing dog to America?

I'm thinking to bring my Chihuahua but I've heard many people said it's troublesome.

What do I need to do to bring my dog there? and how much does it cost?

Thanks

Hello,

I brought my dog a lab-mix from Malaysia to NYC, via Air France (they have two stop routes, 1st-via Amsterdam, 2nd- via Paris) I Chose the one via Amsterdam because they will handle the cleaning and welfare of the dog (thus you have to pay an extra USD300), otherwise in Paris you would need to take the dog out on your own and handle the whole feeling, and 'toilet' sessions. In total it cost me a total of MYR 3000. However, other options you can look into is luftanza, which is said to be very good with animals as well.

What you need, would be full vaccinations per the american requirements (Rabies vacc is a must) your vet should be able to advise. Remember to microchip the dog as well. I used a Vet + an Agent which is needed in Malaysia to transport any animals out or into the country.Different countries may have other different requirements. Just ensure the safety of your dog is the priority when you discuss with the Agent (they will prepare all other documentations required for the traveling).

Do hope this information helps!!

All the best :-)

For this you need to contact the airlines for requirements.

Shots need to be up to date and most airlines required a health certificate no older than 10 days when traveling.

I brought a dog from Germany without an issue, it was a long trip but the dog arrived without any issues.

I brought my cat from Germany. We used KLM, but I'm not sure if I can recommend them now.

Your pet needs a full medical exam (just like you :D) and written statement that the pet is healthy (in English).

The pet also has to be microchipped.

The day before we brought my cat, we called the NY department of agriculture which is responsible for the import of animals and asked them if there is anything else needed, they said we should fax over the medical exam. Don't know if that was really necessary, but we did it anyways. This was NY though, probably different in every state.

The flight itself was hard I think. He had to be in cargo. but when we got him back after 14 hours, the transport box was broken (one wheel fell off, the door didn't close anymore so they wrapped duct tape around). It looked terrible, but my cat was okay. Stressed of course, but other than that he was fine. So that's why I don't recommend KLM.

Your dog, if small enough, can probably be in the cabin with you.

Also, you have to notify the airline way in advance, because they only take a limited number of animals per flight. I also recommend to check with the airline what kind of transport box is needed (we went to the airport with the box and showed it to them to make sure it was okay).

Also, in Hawaii your pet has to be in quarantine after the flight, I don't know if it's only Hawaii or if there are other States that do that, too.

I've brought my cat, from Ukraine. And I used Delta-KLM. Everything went fine ;) And it cost me 200 Euro.

Yes, it's still a lot of work to do, brining your pet here.. My cat didn't have any vaccination record and Vet Passport along with chip when I decided to bring her and sometimes it reminded me another "visa" process, just for cat :) :) but it is possible and not troublesome. Just as I've said before it's a lot of work to do.

Make sure you have all paper work done, along with shots...

Also different air companies have different charges/fees for pets. There are possible different requirements and for cargo/cage. Booking ticket for you, you have to let the air company know you are traveling with pet. They have to check is there is available place for pet.

Also when time to leave, you should arrive at the airport few hours earlier - the check in with pet takes longer... You, most likely, will need to pay for pet's "ticket" right before flight. It takes some time, together with the airport vet control. They should give you a paper which will let you finally travel with pet. Then - check in for pet, then - for you :) :)

You can make it! Good luck!!!!!!! ;)
