DV 2017 registration, photo composition and selection

When registering to the DV 2017, I was wondering about the requirements for the photo composition.
As we know, there is the photo validator link which checks if it meets the requirements. But the validator only checks the photo dimensions (600x600 pixels).

After you register and get your registration number you wait for the results in May.

Whether we are selected or not is controlled by the randomness process, but how do we know that we have not been selected because the photo composition was incorrect (not a light background, position of the head too far or too close....etc) ?


is there a two-step selection ? (first step will eliminate all entries with incorrect photo composition and the second will be the actual random selection of the remaining)

There is a photo tool on the USCIS site that can help you further.

Look to the right of the page and you'll see a section titled: Already have a photo?

You can use this tool to make sure the dimensions are right.

You won't know why you have or haven't been selected. It might be the photo. It might be because it's a duplicate entry. It might just be bad luck.

We entered three times. Missed out the first time. Won the second time (and subsequently got our visas). Missed out third time (entered just as insurance in case we didn't get our visas). Photos each time were done perfectly.

If you get past the photo validator you shouldn't be denied due to a bad photo. Multiple entries or chargeability or education are the normal stumbling blocks

When done, does this photo tool give you the option to save the final photo as a jpeg file ?

So yes, it allows to save the photo when done
