I am. And I've lost friends to gun violence as early as the late eighties.

I can't for the life of me understand why some of you just can't argue your points with Vekman without bringing up where he was raised. If you can't attack his points properly, maybe you should stay out of the fight.

I can't for the life of me understand why some of you just can't argue your points with Vekman without bringing up where he was raised. If you can't attack his points properly, maybe you should stay out of the fight.

Well, I cannot speak for other members of this forum who have been around a lot longer than I, but if you'll notice, I don't go on about things that happen in Russia, or the UK, or Poland, nor do I comment on how much better off they might be if they did "this" or "that". Wanna know why? Because I don't live there, and I am not a self-proclaimed internet expert on their country/state or whatever. Heck, it's hard enough to keep up with what's going on in the country I am currently living!!

Violence has been around since what, the beginning of time? People killed each other with stones. Then spears. Soon, arrows, cannons, trebuchets... well you get the idea. Violence is in the heart, not the tool doing the killing. When guns came along, it just allowed a greater stand-off distance. Eventually, that advantage was multiplied by the repeater-style rifles and pistols, then the auto loaders, etc. So sure, you may lost friends to gun violence. Statistics and demographics would suggest that to be likely.

But as to my earlier comment that is being mocked by a few on here, let's look at gun ownership, the ratios I mentioned. In the 70's and 80's, about 50% of the US population owned a gun. Today it's down to about 32%. So there are actually fewer families that own guns today than did back then, yet we hear about more mass murders. IS it simply the media? I am sure that has an impact; it was unlikely that a person in Iowa or Idaho would hear about a shooting in Florida back in the 70's & 80's. But I think the statistics would bear out that there are more mass murders in 2015 than in the 70's.

See, it's not all that subjective, after all. Math rarely is.

I don't need to be. It's just obvious that you're trying to argue that something completely subjective and impossible to prove is the reason for a complex series of social problem.

Interesting that Roy sees me as a "self-proclaimed internet expert". As definite statements go - I really don't think it's me doing the proclaiming. My memory isn't what it used to be but I'm pretty sure I've never said anything of the sort. It certainly doesn't sound like something I'd say.
