Remember the final 2012 presidential debate - when asked the question about the greatest geopolitical threat.

Gov. Mitt Romney replied it was Russia and carefully explained why.

Barack Obama ridiculed Romney by stating, Governor, the 80s are calling they want their foreign policy back.

hmmm.

Yeah, who cares about Syria, as long as Russia and the United States carry on with their proxy wars. I don't like Assad, but the US strategy was not going anywhere good. Supporting a rebel force, that nobody really knows anything about, while ISIS is ravaging the rest of Syria is recipe for disaster. We could very easily end up with another failed state, with very endless streams of war refugees coming to the west.

ALL WARS ARE BELONG TO US.

People react to the headline. I highly doubt they've thought more deeply about it than that.

To use a slightly offbeat analogy, what's your favourite starship enterprise captain? The one who drinks tea and has philosophical debates or the one who gets in a fist fight every 5 minutes and has a hair trigger for the phasers.

Their approach to precision is controlling the state media to limit mention of civilian casualties.

Of course the US has a pretty poor reputation for doing that too - notorious for friendly fire against their allies, going back to WW2

I referring more to the fact that despite hundreds of dollars in funding for Syrian rebels, the United States seems to have very limited success in building a rebel force.

I still don't understand why you think that Syrias civil war is for the US to fight. If you could point to a previous military intervention the US has done in the middle east that's actually made things better, the idea would have more credibility...

As it stands, it's obvious what Putin is doing. Assad is his ally and supporting him (a terrible regime btw) preserves their influence in the middle east.

Its like Iraq, noone would dispute that saddam was a bad guy, but as we've seen - removing him has come at a cost that might not have been worth paying...

A lot of Americans think nationalism and patriotism is the same thing. It's why after 9/11 and in the build up to Iraq that anyone who didn't agree with unilateral military intervention was deemed unamerican or a traitor. So much for the first amendment,if only some people respected the first as much as they do the second.

It's why all those greasepit cafes took French toast and French fries off their menus.

Not surprised. And no doubt they'll make out that they're helping the civilian population. Their duplicity (and ours) is offensive.

seems our approach is a pretty much confirmed no-go..but i thought for sure we would have gathered as much from bin laden's bunch.

The CIA has run an ostensibly covert training programme for vetted Syrian rebel groups deemed moderate by Western states that have supported the uprising against Assad. Vetted groups in northern Syria have received military support via an operations room based in Turkey.

The programme is separate to the U.S. military's train and equip programme aimed at building a Syrian rebel force to fight ultra-radical Islamic State insurgents. That programme is struggling.

The Free Syrian Army was set up by Syrian army defectors after the eruption of the uprising. The FSA today is a loose alliance of rebel groups without a centralised command and control structure.

Haj Ali said his fighters had attended several training sessions in Qatar and Saudi Arabia. It is at least the third Free Syrian Army group to report being targeted in air strikes that Russia says are targeting Islamic State.

U.S. Senator John McCain said on Thursday Russia's initial air strikes in Syria targeted recruits in the Free Syrian Army rebel group backed by the United States.

FSA groups have been eclipsed in much of Syria by jihadists such as Islamic State and the al Qaeda-linked Nusra Front.

The head of another FSA recipient of foreign military support said it was also hit by a Russian air strike overnight. Yasser Abu Ammar, head of al-Wosta division, said one of his group's headquarters was hit in the Hama countryside.

"They want to weaken the Free Syrian Army and thus only Daesh (Islamic State) remains. Now Russia through these air strikes is destroying all efforts to seek a political solution," Abu Ammar told Reuters by phone.

I see, we're now in the realm of 'you folks' and 'you and your kind'.

Why do you think the US gets involved in these conflicts?

Why do you think the US should get involved?

Interesting that 14 years after 9/11 Al Qaeda has gotten exactly what they wanted in the first place.
