Congrats on becoming a citizen.

Can you elaborate a little bit about the detailed questions they asked? And what are the documents that you believe we should be taking with us on the USCIS interview day? Thanks

For Los Angeles location (LA Convention Center):

1. Separate lines for candidates and for guests (family, friends) at entry to building. Guests don't need to show for who they are there for - it seems pretty open access.

2. security checkpoint (like TSA @ airport, no water)

3. frantically filling out backside of N-445 (oath notice / invite), many dont have pens - sign and date. CAREFUL which lines you fill out.

4. waiting in line in a crowd - they crowd control. Then my batch gets let through to the check-in tables.

5. Pick ANY table to check in (no lines farther back). Bring/show greencard, N-445, any re-entry permits.

6. Most people get asked about the questions on the back of the N-445. They may reverse questions. For example, the N-445 asks under No. 7: "Since your interview, has there been any change in your willingness to bear arms on behalf of the United States (...)". Answer has to be an honest "No" to be admitted ('No' means you are still willing to bear arms). They might instead ask you directly: "Are you willing to bear arms in defense of the United States" or similar. The honest answer has to be "Yes" then. It's the same questions as on the back of the N-445.

The officer then stamps the front of the form, and hand writes a large number on it - that's the table number where you pick up your certioficate after.

7. Go to the seating area and get ushered.

8. Do NOT go to the bathroom to not miss the ceremony. Once the judge is there and the court in session, you will not be allowed in or out.

9. Follow instructions by the ushers. People are admitted to the tables in batches.

Hope that helps

My wife had her interview yesterday. Overall she said it was very easy. She passed as I mentioned in an earlier posting.

History and Civics Questions:

1) What is freedom of religion?

2) When was the Constitution written?

3) Name one state that shares a border with Canada?

4) What is the name of the ocean on the East Coast of the U.S.?

5) Who must register for Selective Service?

6) Why are there 50 stars on the American Flag?

Read: What color is the flag?

Write: The flag is red, white and blue.

The interviewing officer asked a couple of questions about her work. He asked more questions about our marriage, are we still married, did we ever separate, etc...He noticed her name was on the mortgage statements for my (our) house. He asked about that, when was it done, was it done recently for the Citizenship and so on.

She said most of the time was flipping through a lot of papers in her file (which is 3 to 4 inches thick by now) and he would pull out a paper and ask her if that information was still correct.

From her N-400 application he only asked her about her address, is it still current and he asked about her trips out of the US. He did not ask questions from the N-400 about drug use, criminal activity, citations, prostitution, communist affiliations which is what she prepared for the last two days before her interview.

Good Luck all

OK here some more details, adding to the above:

Docs to bring. Very few!

Bring greencard, N-445, any U.S. re-entry permits you might have, state issued driver's license or non-driver's license state ID.

Not required: foreign passport (doesnt make sense anyways for this event)

Do bring a pen (no pencil)

Attire: No jeans, t-shirts, flip flops. It's a court room.

Oath ceremony at the Los Angeles Convention Center (Feb 23, 2016):

My requested door time was 8:03 am (9:00 start of ceremony). They give people different times to stagger arrivals, avoid crowding. I arrived by car at 7:20, skipped the loooong wait of cars entering the underground parking structure (signs "citizenship parking") by driving around the Center to the W side (following "to West Hall" signage), and entered the same garage from the West entrance without any wait. Paid $15 cash at entry. Parked, walked up - all is well covered with signs directing you. Ushers are very friendly.

I had brought a binder to keep my stuff together, which helped a lot - you get an envelope with things like a copy of the two oaths to read from (and the words of The Star Spangled Banner). Good idea to go to the restroom before the ceremony. The entrance to the event hall is from the outside, west side of the building (the West Hall).

1. Separate lanes: One for candidates and one for guests (family, friends) at entry to building. Guests don't need to show for who they are there for - it seems pretty open access.

2. security checkpoint (like TSA @ airport, no water)

3. After security, frantically filling out backside of N-445 (oath notice / invite), many dont have pens - sign and date. CAREFUL which lines on the form you fill out. Do bring a pen. I lent mine to two others.

4. Then waiting a few minutes in a crowd - they crowd control. Finally my batch gets let through to the check-in tables, lined up alongside the side of the hall.

5. Pick ANY table to check in (short or no lines are farther back).

6. At check-in, most people get asked about the questions on the back of the N-445. They may reverse how they ask questions.

The officer then staples greencard (and if appliccable, re-entry permit) to the form, punches a hole through them, then rubber stamps the front of the form, and hand writes a large number on it - that's the table number where you pick up your certificate after the ceremony. The people asking at check-in are immigration officers in civilian clothing. The one who had interviewed me sat one desk over, recognized me, and greeted me by hand shake. I was only asked if anything had changed, nothing more.

7. Receive an envelope with content, and a small flag, and go to the seating area and get ushered in. Last chance for bathroom. Candidates sit in the front of the hall, the guests are physically separated and sit in the back. From now on, do NOT go to the bathroom to not miss the ceremony. Once the judge is there and the court in session, you will not be allowed in or out.

Envelope: An info sheet for what to do next, voting information, a passport application form, a carton cover for the certificate, and a printout of the two oaths and the Star Spangled Banner.

8. 8:45 ceremony starts, many consecutive steps from now on. Just follow instructions and meet your fellow candidates.

The following is roughly in order of events.

General announcements are in English and then Spanish. Mostly people having lost documents and are invited to pick them up at the podium. Voter registration forms are handed out. Fill it out but do not sign it yet (you need to be a citizen to sign it). A lot of people are very challenged in English.

When they start speaking, you better sit. Someone at the podium knocks with a hammer three times - court!

A delegate of the Federal Government speaks and authorizes the judge to act.

The hall gets declared a court of law of the local federal circuit court.

A USCIS person speaks, then the judge. The pledge of allegiance (standing, right hand up) gets administered (see envelope contents), then the judge gave a speech. Speeches by others, then the oath of allegiance to the flag (shorter than the pledge, right hand up, standing).

At the end, the Star Spangled Banner is sung, welcome to sing along (standing, right hand to heart, face the flag).

Congratulations, new citizens!!

Countries of origin are honoured by top 5 (1. Mexico, 2. Philippines, 3. Iran, 4. Vietnam, 5. China). Military members naturalizing are honoured by name. Two videos are shown (one is Obama speaking), then instructions - sign the voter registration form now, and hand it over (that part is voluntary).

The guests are now dismissed:

Certificates are only handed out once all guests have left the hall.

9. From seating to tables: Follow instructions by the ushers. People are admitted to the tables in batches. Line up ONLY at the one you have indicated by a hand written number on your N-445. You hand in the form (with greencard attached) and in return receive the certificate.

10 SCRUTINIZE spelling of your name, date of birth, and ensure it's embossed. Then walk off. If something is not right, let them know right at the table. There is also a resolution table to your right, to get things fixed. Photos can be taken with the flag in the background, from behind the flag. Restrooms along the way. Tables where you can sign the certificate (can also do at home).

There are lots of businesses out there selling flowers, photo ops, lapel pins (US flag, $8), certificate holders ($10). At exit from the building (East side), friends/family can welcome you. Wave your little flag.

That day, 3,146 people became American during the 9am ceremony at this location (there is one afternoon ceremony too, 1day/month for L.A.), from 100+ countries. 11 servicemen/-women who naturalized were honored.

Recommended after the ceremony:

- scan your certificate after signing it with ink (!), e.g. ball point pen, or a real ink pen.

- show the original to HR at your employer, so they can update your status. They might make a copy of it.

- apply for a passport (need to send original of certificate, so go see your employer first) (find an application location here: https://iafdb.travel.state.gov/ )

- after 30 days, go to the local social security administration office, bring original certificate. (find it here: https://secure.ssa.gov/ICON/main.jsp )

- Post your status here

- party in red, white and blue!

Cheers all,

MyOwnV

Can you fill out the back of the N-445 the morning of the oath ceremony or does it have to be done there? Thanks.

In my view you can, but consider that if you get a speeding ticket or get into an accident on your way to the oath, you will have to disclose it. It's ANY traffic ticket for the short time period between interview and oath, that needs to be disclosed.

What you could do, is fill out your address portion and signature and check boxes like the one if you have been married or divorced since your interview, but leave the tickets/legal question box blank until you're there.

Did they have a table to apply for a passport at your oath? Some people say they have applied at the oath ceremony. We have the application all filled out with the photo as my wife has a trip 2 weeks after the oath, ceremony March 16, 2016 and her flight April 2, 2016. She will also be at the Convention Center so thank you for all your tips! Thanks.

Even with expedited processing, there's a good chance that she won't receive her passport in two weeks. However, if you have proof of travel within 2 weeks, you can make an appointment at a passport agency. These offices, unlike the passport receiving facilities, will ensure you get your passport in time and sometimes even provide same day service. The catch is that they only have a handful around the country and you have to make an appointment and show up in person.

Applying at the oath ceremony or at a receiving facility like a post office or a library will give you the choice of standard or expedited service which will both take more time than the rush service provided by these passport agencies.

Things have gone pretty quickly so here's an update!

On the 24th, I had my interview. I arrived a little late (5 minutes) but that was no problem. I had to wait to be called up for about 10 minutes. An immigration officer came out who spoke English with a very heavy accent that was hard to understand.. But we managed through it. So as I was walking with her she started bombarding me with questions: do you work, do you study, where do you go to school, are you a communist, have you been involved with terrorists, where do you live? It all seemed like an interrogation...

Then we sat down, she started asking those exact same questions again. She asked to see my documents and proof of SS registration. She did not even go through either of my passports. I don't think we went through the entire application either, but maybe we did - it seemed pretty stressful and rushed. We then did the English test and civics test.

The civics questions that I remember:

- Who is the Chief Justice?

- What is the term of a representative in the house?

- What month do we elect the president in?

- How many representatives are there in the house?

- Who is the father of our country?

I don't remember the other one. But then she said I was approved and I could have a ceremony on Friday but I would have to wait in the lobby to get an appointment, or get it in the mail and do it later. So I figured might as well get it over with.

So I had my ceremony on Friday (yesterday). 64 other people were being naturalized. There was a ceremony scheduled before us and even though mine was scheduled for 11, we were not called from the waiting room until 10:55. At 11 everybody was settled in and the check-in process began. So the check-in took 40 minutes, thus the actual ceremony did not start until 11:45.

Overall, I know some people love them and are moved by them, but I personally found it very corny and over the top. Then again, I don't like over the top patriotism, blind recitation of the pledge of allegiance, the anthem being played at every little event you can imagine - to me, it loses that value. The oath in parts has no legal value (for example, renouncation - USSC ruled that, bearing arms - we're already required to bear arms anyway, so nothing changes), but I'm going to stop criticising the whole thing and just be satisfied that I finished the whole process and respect that to each their own and people may love it. :) I think it mostly just felt like going through the motions, every day there is a ceremony there, so things are going with a template of stuff being done all the time. If I had a ceremony like they showed on the video at Mt Rushmore or something unusual I think it would feel different! Haha, But all is good.

The call of countries had a hiccup as "France" was missed, so it's a good thing they go through the whole thing as a rehearsal!

Then we picked up our certificates and the thing was over.

Now just to apply for a passport :)

I do not think you should be expecting an interview appointment letter if your status says you are in line for an interview. "Typically" your status should change to "An interview appointment has been scheduled for you." Then the letter should come in 6 to 9 days.

Now sometimes people will say that the status is not being updated and you still could receive your interview appointment letter. And then there are problems such as my wife never got her letter at all. I had to make calls to the service number and finally request a Tier 2 officer to find out her interview was scheduled 4 days from when I was speaking with him.

Hello Everyone!

I finally had my Interview AND Oath Ceremony on 2/27 and I am now a U.S. Citizen!!!! :):):) Can someone please help me change my status here?

The process was very long and tedious as far as the wait goes... we spent 5 hrs at the Newark, NJ office; however the interview and ceremony only took about 20-25 minutes respectively.

The interview started with the written and oral test and then it continued with the civics test.

Questions:

1. What is the name of the speaker of the house?

2. For how long do we elect a president?

3. Name one of the two longest rivers in the U.S.

4. Who was living in the U.S. territory before the Europeans came?

5. What do we call the first 10 amendments to the Constitution?

After that, the officer proceeded to go over the documents and asked me if I was still married to the person that filled for my fiancee visa and if we had any kids. The officer also asked to see ALL of the 3 tax returns we had filled and I only had 2 (2014 & 2013), so he then asked for the 3rd (either 2012 or 2015) and since we haven't filled yet I just apologized since I didn't have a copy of our 2012 returns, but I knew he did. So then the officer started looking for those copies and made sure that the 3 copies of tax returns (2014, 2013, 2012) were at the front of my very thick folder and then gave me paperwork to review and sign. After that he said he was recommending me for Naturalization and that I should wait for the next Oath Ceremony that was taking place that day.

Good luck to everyone out there and I hope you get lucky and get the Oath Ceremony on the same day as well. :)

Thanks to everyone adding their info here, it really helps to be able to share this experience with others.
