Expired GC --> Travel

Hello there,

I have filed my I-751 (7/6/15) and already did biometrics (8/7/15). And my GC already expired (9/23/15). And i will be travelling to south east asia next year Feb 2016, am i right to bring along my extension letter, my passport and my expired green card? But I am worried there will be an issue for my expired GC when i come back to States. Should i call the USCIS office regarding my 10 years GC? Or should i wait?

Elaine , i traveled with the extension letter and no problem at the POE whatsoever.you are right , just carry your PP and GC. the officer did not even look at expired gc.

Any trouble you might face will be with travelling to another country. Some people have horror stories from places like Costa Rica which apparently does not accept extension letters. However, in terms for returning to the US, you will have no worries!

No problems re-entering the US with your documents, but sometimes the overseas airlines are staffed with people who are not familiar with the extension letter. I encountered some questions about why my GC was expired when I tried to board a flight from Asia to the US, I simply explained what the letter was for and asked to speak to a supervisor. The supervisor was able to "sign-off" on me boarding the flight. It was not a big issue, but I would suggest checking in slightly earlier in case you have to do what I did which wasted about 15 mins.

And some countries also have outgoing immigration, while leaving country where they will check your VISA etc. So probably they need to agree too on the situation.

You can though and it's a more better option than the extension letter as it's more "authentic" to people who are not familiar with extension letter. However it all depends if they'll give it to you or not at your local field office during your info pass appointment as they do so mostly in emergencies. They'll normally want to see a flight itinerary though before issuance. If you're traveling to a common first world destination, you should be good with your extension letter. Things might get tricky with some foreign nations in 3rd world countries in South America or Asia.

I went to ask for the stamp today and they refused to give it to me saying that they can't give out a stamp when you have a valid extension letter. I pointed out that I will be traveling in december but still nothing.
