My fiance entered on a K1 visa on September 10th, but he is not in the SAVE database yet. I read that we should wait until he is in the SAVE database to file for a SSN. Has this happened to anyone else? Any advice? Thanks!

If you received an I-94 form or stamp at your Point of Entry (POE), then you should be able to skip milimelo's step. You only need to go to CBP if there is no documented entry as evidenced by a real I-94. Upon POE, it sometimes takes a few weeks for the SAVE database to be updated. Some are lucky and it's updated immediately. For others it takes several weeks. If there is an SSA office near you, I would visit weekly and ask each time if they see your entry within the SAVE database. Once it's there, they can get your SSN the next day, but you have to go in person to have them give it to you on the next day. Otherwise you need to wait for the SSN card in the US postal mail. Good luck.

Thanks very much for all your responses! My fiance got an entry stamp and we have his electronic I-94 form. We're checking the SAVE database online with his I-94 number. Should we also go to the SSA to check if they see him in the SAVE database? Will they be able to see if he's in the database before it's available online?

Okay, I might have misspoke on the CBP requirement. There is a possibility that they recorded the I-94 information incorrectly and that the point of entry record needs to be corrected. If that is the case, I highly recommend Darnell's advice here:

http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/405546-ssn-howto/

Darnell is pretty emphatic that after 2 weeks, a person should go into an SSA office and request that they check the SAVE database, and then return every week thereafter. To answer your question above, I think the SSA office might be able to search the SAVE database on more parameters than the ones the public have access to on the save.uscis.gov site. For example, if the I-94 information is incorrect, the SSA office might be able to find your SAVE record by searching on your name. Good luck.
