Hi

Any advice on the following:

Moving to NJ on a K1 visa. Once I get my license and some credit I can lease a car.

In the interim, what did people do during the period of arrival until AOS sent off/received? Basically I want to know my best option for when I arrive in NJ to start driving asap.

Rent a car? Borrow? Purchase cheap? I know there are leasing companies for new expats but surely they dont do that without a US license and some paperwork?

Thanks

check all your options out when you get here but more important in NJ is car insurance. Check that out as NJ has some of the highest rates in the country. So, when you consider what car to buy or lease, call and find out what insuance on the vehicle will cost.

If the car does not have one, get yourself a GPS device and put in your home. Then while you are waiting for the AOS, at least you can drive around and familize yourself with the area.

You will be using this time for the marriage, learning to drive on the right side of the road,

you will also need to know driving laws in NJ to know how long you can drive on UK license and what you need to apply for license in NJ

so, concentrate on the needed thanks such as marriage and AOS paperwork

Thanks. I actually lived there for a while so I am familiar with the driving system. I guess I might just try and rent or borrow although renting is killer expensive

I (USC) bought and insured a second car and let my fiancé/husband drive it using his UK license. My Texas auto insurance covered it as long as I gave my permission for it to be used. I think that is pretty standard in the U.S...the car is insured, not the driver. Very different concept than in the UK. My insurance agent actually told me to do that. After he got a license and some legal documentation EAD/Greencard, I changed both car titles to joint ownership and got his name listed on the joint insurance as a regular driver of both cars. The cost did not go up because I was already paying to insure two vehicles. So...help your fiance out with enough money to buy a second car and maybe she will let you borrow it. ??
