What does the potential government shut down mean for us?

The potential for a shutdown is being delayed until December 11. It's way too early to predict how the budget battle in December might work out, but I'm hoping that there are no problems because my fiance will be arriving about a week later and we'll be submitting her green card application shortly thereafter.

The stop gap bill that passed through the Senate today funds the government until Dec 11.

Senate passed a budget today

There hasn't been a proper budget passed through Congress in several years. What was passed in the Senate today was a continuing resolution, which were meant to be short-term spending programs but have increasingly become de facto budgets under Obama's presidency because Republicans don't like dealing with him much.

No, there is no shutdown........

The beginning of the fiscal year is Oct 1st. There was a short term spending bill to keep the government funded until Dec. 11th only this must be dedcided on by Thursday. The Senate passed the bill it is now going to the House who must decied by then.

If there is a government shut down only what is defined as "essential workers" will be able to work basically some senior level officials to keep the lights on only. There will be instructions on websites including State Department USCIS and DHS on the impact of the shutdown on all services.

So just stay tuned to see IF the House passes the bill and if the do not what will happen.

USCIS is funded by fees and therefore is not directly impacted but your visa process may be delayed because of the surrounding services. Again, wait and see. There was a government shut down two years ago and services were impacted. It just is what it is. They are all to blame but we keep voting for them so we get what we get. Everyone things its some other member not their own but its all of them.

Two things: October 1 isn't going to happen anymore (or much more than likely won't). Long, long story short (it involves this Panned Parenthood spectacle and the finer details of the budget process) -- Speaker Boehner stepping down avoided the shutdown at this particular stage of passing the budget, but it is likely going to become an issue in mid-December during a different stage of the budget.

What that would mean for you: it depends where you are in the process. Embassies will stay open for visa processing (at least at first) because visas are fee-funded. USCIS will stay open, again because it is fee-funded. I am unsure about NVC, I think that does shut down. If the embassy or USCIS needs additional information about you that relies on another government entity that *is* shut down, you will be delayed. No government shutdown has lasted more than 17 days. You're looking at a 3 week or so delay (plus whatever backlog may build up ahead of you at whatever stage you're on).
