Balikbayan Box - Sending From North Carolina to Philippines ???

I was wondering if anyone in North Carolina has shipped a Balikbayan Box to the Philippines,

and if so:

1) What shipping company did you use?

2) What size and weight box did you use? (is it a special type of box?)

3) About how much did it cost to send?

4) About how long did it take to get there?

My wife and I would like to send a Balikbayan Box to her family in Oriental Mindoro and would like

it to get there by Christmas.

Thanks for any help you can give me

We are in Raleigh and we use a Filipino grocery store. We use their box, which is very strong and cost $5.00. Shipping anything you can fit in this large box cost us $100. We ship to Ozamiz City Mindanao. Takes about 2 1/2 months with door to door service.

Thanks, I'm in the Raleigh area...

Which store did you use - if you don't mind sharing...

You can PM me if you wish.

Thanks much

No problem.

BTW, if your looking for traditional Filipino food, they have a little restaurant that serves all the dishes that your wife is accustom to. Great people there. We love going just for the food and little grocery shopping.

Name: Oriental Store of Raleigh and Filipino Express Restaurant

Address: #100, 3601 Capital Blvd, Raleigh, NC 27604

Phone:(919) 876-6911

There is another Filipino store in Angier but I have never been to it, since it is a distance from where we live, and I really don't know if they do any shipping. Google it and it should come up in the results.

Red Horse, not sure it is 5.9 in the USA.

Hi

just noticed that you are in the Raleigh area. I live in Cary. I've been following your posts in the November 2015 l i-129f Filers. Great information, really glad I found this website. We're still a ways away from being united here, but I'm hopeful it will happen by this summer.

A concern of mine is that my future wife doesn't know anybody in the US. Everything here will be completely knew (and very different) from what she is used to.

I was wondering if there is there any kind of Filipino community group in this area; something that would make her feel less...let's say away from home and friends. I've seen the PAANC, but I haven't talked to anyone there yet.

btw; I've been to the store/restaurant on Capital Blvd; great food

thanks

Rick

I am also in the Raleigh area and wondering the same thing. My wife has been here since the end of August and it would be nice if she could interact with people from home.

I am very excited to have my future wife join me here, but I know after the "honeymoon" wears off, it will be a big adjustment. We're hopeful she can be here before summer.

How has your wife adjusted to life in NC? Has she been able to meet Filipinos in the area?

Here is my experience. You need to keep your wife busy so she doesn't get cabin fever. Remember, she is used to walking out the door of her home in the Philippines and catching a tricycle or jitney and that's what gives her freedom. So get her out of the house as much as possible. Take her to attractions here in NC. The zoo is a great place. The weekend art shows. The flea market. Museums. Shopping centers like outlet centers, malls or out door walking stores like Crossroads here in Raleigh is a great place. The race track, sporting events, parks and walking trails. They just don't want to be cramp up in the house.

Second thing is try and help them learn to drive. Now is the time to find a deserted church or High School parking lot and let her drive the car up and down. Encourage, Encourage and Encourage!!

Next thing is to have "communication devices" available so she can stay connected to the Philippines (Filipino cable channels) and skype or magic jack to talk to family. They will stay in touch for about 3-6 months constantly and then you will see it fade as they begin to become adjusted in this "new land" they find themselves.

It's hard to find others. We have found a couple of folks but it was just blind luck. Sitting in a McDonald's one Sunday afternoon and I saw out the window what look to me like a Filipino family coming in for lunch. I asked my wife and she said she thought so. Well my wife is not shy and when they came by our table she said hello and sure enough, they responded to the warm welcome that was conveyed in Cebuano.

North Raleigh and South East Durham (South Point mall area because of most are working either at UNC or Duke Hospitals) is where most Filipino's live. Take her to the Filipino store on Capital Blvd where there is a little restaurant serving Filipino traditional dishes and you will see many Filipino's there. Just introduce yourselves. They are not going to come to you, you have to go to them.

Well that's my 2 cents.

thanks for your "2 cents". I am learning every day. The driving part is going to be a challenge. She has no interest in learning to drive, at least that's what she says now. I guess if you never had a need to drive, why worry about it... Oh well, empty parking lot here I come.

We've been skyping, using IMO and Viber for years, that's going to help a lot. Filipino network was new to me, but glad to have found out about it.

I definitely plan on taking her to the store on Capital Blvd. Who knows, maybe we'll run into each other there some day. It's a small world.

We lived in Jacksonville, NC when my husband was still in the marines. We used johnnyair so that my family in the Philippines did not have to pay absurd custom taxes. I only bumped into other Filipinos when we would do grocery shopping at the commissary. I was really lonely and had no one to talk to for a while except my husband and our dogs lol. Then I just got used to how simple and quiet the life is. Now I miss NC terribly because everything is so fast and loud here in California. My husband got me interested in fishing and he would always take me to the shooting range. I miss those activities :(
