I felt that it was important enough to attend my wife's interview in Bogota in 2003. Did I make a difference? Who knows? I would have felt terrible if she had been rejected and I had not been there with her. Lots of people don't attend and they are fine. I know of a few cases where the spouse was able to clarify some issues. Did they really make a difference? How is your wifes english? The conoffs are supposed to be fluent in Spanish. My wife indicated that her interviewer was fairly poor with her Spanish.

I feel that my presence DID make a strong statement as to the validity of the marriage.

Good Luck,

T

Her interview will probably be in June/July in Lima, PERU. I have read differnt opinions on how important it is for the both of us to attend. Sounds like it's much more important if your on the K-1 trail...please let me know!!!

THANKS!!

My husband attended my interview whether or not it was any good who knows.... also something to consider, some consulates will not allow the spouse in anyway so you might want to check just in case.

Personally, better to be there than not, even if you cant get into the consulate as you will be there for her support anyway.

It is highly recommended that the spouse attend the interview in Jamaica. I would ask people who are from the same country as you.

I gotta agree with Belwin...try to find some folks from Peru and get advice. Obviously, the answer to the question depends 1) on the embassy, 2) on the strength of the evidence that supports your petition, and 3) the type of visa.

I attended the K-3 interview with my wife. Can't say it helped for sure, but there sure were a lot of "unaccompanied" ladies getting turned down for K-1s.....and my wife got her visa without ANY questions being asked.

I'd say the higher the concern about visa fraud, the more important it (being there) is. It's probably not a problem in the UK, but visa fraud is an issue in Colombia and I suspect it would be in Jamaica. Peru is not that dissimilar to Colombia economically speaking...so visa fraud may be a concern there as well.

If you're relationship is important to you (which I am sure it is) and you can swing it financially, my advice would be to go.

Good luck to you.

Mike

Proxcimity to fiance plays a big part. Philippines is a long way from the SE USA

Tita and I decided it would be alot more helpful if I scheduled my vacation to help her pack and be with her on that 9000 mile trip accross the Pacific.

If I was wealthy and could be away for the medical and the interview and the waiting and the trip back, sure, I would love to do that.

If you are like me, and are a working Joe, and you have to make choices, maybe you will make the one Tita and I did.

THat is true....HOWEVER....at the Bogota embassy, there are two entrances....once for folks pursuing visas and one for American citizens...and you cannot walk freely between the two areas. Don't know if this holds for other embassies, but I suspect it does for some, especially those who get a large number of visa applicants every day.

I agree that distance is a factor. I imagine the embassy in the Phillipines is much for "forgiving" about a fiance/fiancee/spouse not attending the interview than embassies in countries closer to the U.S. Of course, on the other hand, imagine how you'd feel if you made a choice like is mentioned below...and the petition was rejected or delayed for more info?

I might also make this point. Many of the embassies have a rather quick turnaround time for the visa. So, if you are planning to be with your fiance/fiancee/spouse for the trip to the U.S., then you can probably stretch the trip a couple of days for the interview. For example, in Colombia, the embassy interviews you one day and has the visa ready by 4 p.m. on the next business day.

Other folks have suggested that if you cannot make the interview, send a notarized letter explaining your absence (i.e., can't afford it, can't get time off from work, etc.) with the beneficiary to the interview. I can't hurt and maybe it will help.
