Who plans on living outside of the USA?

Right now for us, the US is the better choice. But if we do have problems getting our visa, I would consider moving to Indonesia and living in Jakarta. Even without that, living outside the US is a possiblity for retirement or otherwise.

we'd love to have property in both countries, so we can move back and forth when we want. :)

Actually, that's what Joel and I have talked about too. :)

I want to finish all my medical training, work here for a bit then maybe move to the UK. Paul doesnt want to go back so far, but I think he'll get disillusioned sooner than he believes. After retirement we want to get a place somewhere warm and move about a lot. I would definitly be in favor of University in the UK for our kids! Plus I think it would be good for them to be raised in more than one country.

I was just wondering if anyone else here has considered and/or will be living in their non-US-citizen spouse's country in the future...just curious....my husband and i plan on moving back to belize and starting a family in about 5 yrs--we are in the US to save money and further our educations so we can lead successful lives in a third-world country. We also wanted the visa so we could travel back and forth to visit family, whereas before, Steven would have never been able to even take a vacation with me in the US. If the US is only temporary for you, why?

We have chosen to live in Belize for many reasons...we are environmentalists for one, and have land down there and secondly, want to raise our kids in a less-materialistic place, in the hopes that they will grow up valuing different things in life...has anyone else chosen this path?

I'm open to the possibility of eventually living in Tanzania, but finding a job there that pays more than $100 a month would be tricky. We might save up money in the States and then go to Tanzania to open a restaurant.

We'll have to see how Ombeni likes America. Coming to Tanzania the second time (by myself; the first was with students) was a TOTALLY different experience. Although I made some friends, I was kind of lonely for Westerners. And I got tired of being stared at all the time. I imagine he'll encounter the same problems here, although perhaps not to the extent that I encountered them in Tanzania. His English is much better than my Swahili skills, and people here are more accustomed to foreigners (although we'll see what kind of bigotry he's subjected to). In any case, we're both willing to compromise to be together. I wouldn't be miserable living in Tanzania, and hopefully he won't be miserable living here.

I have to agree. I love the area he's from, and Yarmouth isn't that far from the Pubnicos. Best of both worlds to me. :)

I didn't just consider it, I did it. I've been here in Germany since May 04. Now we are coming back to the US. I don't hate Germany. I'd come back if there was a compelling reason to do so. It is just before now, Germany was the right choice. Easy immigration for me, mostly free uni for my husband, etc. Now, my husband is about finished with school. There are about zero entry-level jobs in his field of study here (you are basically nailed to doing whatever it is you learned to do in most cases), but there are an OK number in the US. There are also lots of jobs in his 2-3 fallback fields. I also would have about no problem finding a job when I go back, but it is near impossible for me to do it here. It just makes sense to go back right now, especially with the fact that we now have a kid to feed and set a good example for.

Maybe one day we'll come back. Maybe not. Maybe we'll move to a third country. We have always been interested in Canada or parts of Scandinavia. Who knows? One thing at a time though.
