My husband and I are in the same boat. Both of us are very experienced. I have a degree from an English University and lots of international experience. My husband is a Manufacturing Engineer with an MBA and years of experience. He is getting calls and a few interviews here and there, but no job yet. My field is Marketing, which is much more competitive. I've had one Skype interview, two face-to-face interviews and one telephone interview in 9 months. I've received the radio silence too. I've also been applying for any kind of job to pay bills (cleaning , retail etc) as well as my field, and am still getting nothing (I never had this problem before). I have also been networking and volunteering with the hope of meeting someone that can help me.

We are also willing to relocate. It's a very stressful situation, as we have an infant, and are going to run out of our savings early next year. I've tried contacting the local immigration centre for help but they are inundated with people. I am at my wits end.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I have yet to immigrate to US and seeing all the skillful people without jobs makes me more panic because I am just a graduate degree holder and that too from Pakistan. I have more than 10 years experience in Human Resource in a Cement Factory. If its that much difficult for people like you to get a job i wonder what will happen to me :/

Avoid despairing. One thing that you can start with is to envision how your skills and experience are transferable to other industries. Make a "game" out of it -- reward yourself for coming up with "X" number of reasons per industry or field.

The labor market in the states has been very rough the past several years. Particular industries very hard. Its a JOB finding a job. There are a lot of people already here, competing with them too. Been there its rough. Coming from abroad can only imagine how much tougher. its a grind. Get with recruiters. Reach out to network of friends/family/colleagues. Its hard to job search all day /every day...weigh taking a less desired job to offset wait of finding a good one if needed.

Thank you both of you. Finding a job these days is hard all around the world. Especially for those who travel from some other country. Obviously landing on to a good job just after stepping into States is very hard. I am thinking of hiring the services of a good recruiter in Castro valley California. Does any one of you knows any good recruiter who can help me in finding a good job.

Unless my experience is wholly different, recruits don't typically pay recruiters any fees upfront. Recruiters are paid after sourcing candidates to filled roles.

Yeah you are right recruiter dont typically take any kind of fee before they can secure a good job for you. But i dont have any kind of experience dealing with the recruiter and that too in States.

I seem to see many more places advertising, big box stores, even the Off License had a sign up.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

First make sure that your resume is American standard. They don't use A4 like we do in Europe and Asian, so any resume you have from your home country will need to be changed to American layout, which is a bit wider and a bit shorter. They also seem to like a one page resume with a few bullet points for each previous job rather than the more explanatory resume we have in Europe. Google "American resume" and check out different formats. It might be very different from what you're used to.

Second, it might help to apply for jobs with international companies, who have more experience with hiring people with international background and people transferring in from other countries.

Also try and find a networking group to join. There are probably lots of them in New York, ranging from a pure engineering group to more broader groups.

Also remember that a few days after your interview, you can contact the person interviewing you to say it was nice meeting them and la la la stuff like that. :) Depending on the kind of report I got with the interviewer, I often tend to do these follow ups via email but occasionally via phone as well.

I understand the frustration. I've been in the US since October 2015 and has been job hunting since then. I know that my degree is not accredited here, and as such, going back to school in your dedicated field, is definitely something to do in order to land that ideal job. I'm not giving up nevertheless because we are basically starting life all over again in a new country.

Their should really be a thread on how difficult it is to find employment in america, even with a work permit! until you really get some USA based employment on your resume, they are going to look at americans before you. then you add in the 'culture' factor and that makes it even harder.

Might almost be easier to get an HB-1 Visa from India to work in the USA than being in your situation! Lots of Americans now are losing jobs that way. Yes, its hard for anyone to get a job now. I think some businesses are waiting until after the election to see if there is a change in political party and a move back to capitalism vs. socialism/crony capitalism. Keep looking, keep yourself busy.

Where in california do you live?

What are your BAs in?

What type of job are you looking for?

Did you make your resume 'american'?

that sounds awful:(

Where are you looking for jobs?
