GC Travelling Without Parole

Hello,

I am a senior citizen with a GC sponsored by my son. My wife is also on a GC and about to apply for her citizenship. Since our GC status, we have frequently travelled outside the US and on our last entry to the US, our passports were hand marked by the Immigration Officer "Needs re-entry permit out 9 months". However, I fell sick and left the US by myself without getting a permit and just recalled that my passport was stamped as such. I've been out of the US for about 10 months and wanted to travel back. Can I travel back as before with my valid non-US passport and valid US green card or do I need to obtain some additional paperwork prior to travelling.

Since you weren't outside the US for over a year you do need a re-entry permit to attempt to re-enter.

However, given the notation in your passport it's possible you will need to demonstrate that you haven't abandoned your residency. It sounds as if you've spent a lot of time outside the US in the past two years, and a green card is for someone who wishes to live in the US.

Ah, would that mean a quick trip to the local US consulate and ask what kind of proof I'd need to demonstrate I haven't abandoned residency? Or would I simply be at the mercy of the Immigration Officer at the port of entry? Thanks again Hypnos!

The second one.

Typically they are looking for something like...

• Maintaining a US bank account.
• Maintaining a US residence (mortgage/rent receipts, etc.)
• Paying federal income taxes.
• Maintaining credit card accounts, insurance policies, and other US-based assets and liabilities.

And similar. It's entirely possible you would simply be waved through and asked for nothing, but given the notation you've already received then it wouldn't surprise me if they pulled you into Secondary and asked for something like that.
