I used a lawyer out of fear mainly, fear that I would not be able to do this, fear that I would make a mistake. I felt more comfortable just handing someone else money who had done it before.

I was wrong, In several instances I have been the one to take control, I was advised not to get a japanese police clearance and wait for the checklist......It takes three months to get. I did it anyway Now its ready and before it was asked for. I called the NVC and pushed things, I was told had I not called it could be 42 days before my case was updated and the IV fee available, One day after calling the IV fee is available and paid.......Hindsight is 20/20 and I am not complaining about my lawyer at all, she doesn't technically have to do what is necessary to make my case faster. I guess what I am saying is that if you did hire a lawyer, still do the things that are suggested here, because they will help you in the long run. don't just sit and wait and expect that your lawyer will make all the necessary calls or the right decisions.....

As is pointed out in most of the innumerable "lawyer" threads on this site, the necessity and value of having a lawyer depends on one's situation and circumstances. If you got a bad one, fire him.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Glad My feelings are validated, she is 100% a nice person, but she is not doing anything to speed up the process, and as the other poster said, with this site and the volumes of knowledge and experience here, theres no need for a lawyer, it was a waste of money , live and learn I guess

Like Tbone says, its a very broad generalization to just decry any legal svc. It helps when people search and do the work that lawyers would do and not just expect the community here to spoon feed everything.

I got a lawyer/3rd party service. It was fear based as well. I think its all comfort level and your specific situation/case.

If you have a lot of bureaucracy and such, I think it could be fortuitous to get 'real' help, but a standard case/embassy..etc fluency in english/legal forms...VJ definitely is more than enough to help.

Some people dont really do the work on VJ either. They just come and scream help without doing anything. If you need that level of help, that 3rd party help is legitimate. There are certainly more options than the lawyers that are over charging you. I saw a lot of small independent (non firms) of people just offering services from their basement ...etc. Also the embassy involved applies quite a bit.

Lawyers are beneficial for certain cases. I would never dismiss one without exploring options. I had experience with a maybe-good one and one not-so good one.

Whatever you do, hire a lawyer or not, be proactive and do your own research regarding all paperwork.
