Hello all,

My fiancé' received his E-Packet 3 the end of August. His passport expires in May of 2016, so he applied for a new one because his current one will have 5 or 6 months left before expiration by the time he gets his appointment at the embassy. We would like to know if it will pose a problem if he completes the Visa application with his current passport, but enters the US with his new passport? Should he wait until he receives the new one to complete the Visa application?

Under any circumstances can an embassy transfer your paperwork to another embassy?

Thanks for any assistance!

I have read on the Department of State - US visa page that you can travel on one passport when your visa is in another. For example, my fiance's country issued handwritten passports until the last few years. The embassy could print the visa on a handwritten passport if it's not expired, and the beneficiary can travel on a new machine readable passport if they travel after the November 25th cut of date (when handwritten passports won't be accepted by airlines any longer).

I can't find the link, but I would suggest you fill out the DS-160 with the current passport, but apply for a new passport now. You can always update your information and if you get the new passport before the interview, you can fill out a new DS-160. They would probably not want to issue the visa on a passport that will expire in less than six months, but you don't need to hold up the progress of your case because of the passport.
