I agree. Out of line and no way to talk to a soon to be family member.

I think the way her sisters behaved in the show (hopefully staged and 'conveniently' edited) did not really show how much they care about their sister, but more on the side of rooting drama to happen. When he said 'I will contribute 90 % of my income to my family back in JA' and she goes 'well maybe I will do a prenup', the face of her short hair sister was just all lightened up, it's like screaming silently 'where is my popcorn ??'

The JA guy could completely be faking it but at least his upfront honesty on distribution of income should be appreciated, it will be way worse scenario later down the road when they actually got married and need money, but not able to reach an agreement.

He thinks he can survive with only 10% of his income in US, and expects his future American wife (the golden goose?) to help out the rest of expenses like car, gases, food, rental/mortgage loan... etc?

I would not want a guy like that.

I was just saying it's better to be honest upfront than hide and reveal it later after getting married.. I was in no way of saying he's keeper though, don't get all work up lol

Not getting work up at all :)

Just cannot understand how 'some people' think it is ok to send all/almost their money home while leaving their spouse to shoulder the weight of household expenses.

IMHO, it is tough to survive on 1 income in US for a normal family, will be worst if there is/are kids involved.

Hopefully, it was dramatized for ratings.

I sincerely hope so, really. It's just hard to picture how they manipulated/edited that. He said directly to the camera what his plans were, and that he knew she'd hate it. Unless they specifically asked him to say that... I don't even know.

Haha!

I still cannot figure out why Loren had to move in with her parents. She quit her job. How is that helping the $$ situation? All that is left is AOS.

I can't figure that out either. I wonder if maybe her dad was paying her NYC rent and wasn't willing to do that for the two of them? I guess it's one thing to financially support your daughter but another to support her and her husband. I don't know. If she was living there alone, that is a huge apartment for a young single person in NYC. Makes me wonder if there was some Parental Payroll going on, or maybe roommates who didn't want to participate?

Me neither. Wow. Again, I really hope that this was dramatized for effect. Otherwise, he's not only one of these people who live by the mantra "it is easier to ask forgiveness than permission" (which is horribly manipulative to the point of sociopathic in my opinion) but also someone who doesn't realize/care that money is fungible.

So yes, it would be 90% of "his income" but if Melanie is paying out of her income to support him, he may as well just be taking her money and sending it directly to his sisters, you know? What he should do, and I hope they figured out a system that works for them, is something like a mine/yours/ours accounting system. One joint account, two separate accounts. You figure out the monthly "family expenses" (mortgage, cars, insurance food, whatever you're going to consider communal expenses) and those expenses get paid out of the family account.

You pay INTO the family account based on whatever system is fair to you (and that's different for everyone). For some it would be 50/50, others have other arrangements. I know a couple who does it as a percentage of income... say the total family income is $100K, wife makes $60K, husband makes $40K. "Family expenses" total $2000/month (let's dream, right?). Wife puts in $1200/month (60% of $2000) into the family account, husband puts in $800). You promise to each contribute a specific dollar amount or percentage to a "family savings" (emergency fund, basically) and individual retirement (maybe if that's financially on your radar) and after that whatever is left of your own income after contributing to the family expenses is your own discretionary income. You want to buy 3 designer handbags? Go nuts, honey. Saving for that stupid motorcycle? Have at it, dear. Want to send all of your post-family contributions to Jamaica? Very generous of you sweetheart.

Only way I can see it working for them with this 90% of his income to JA thing is if they maintain completely separate financial lives. That he does things like buy a car with cash saved up, pays his own bills with that 10% left over, and contributes to groceries/utilities. And signs a quitclaim or something for the house/condo/whatever. I could see not expecting him to contribute to a mortgage as long as he has no legal claim to the house. Sure, you're giving him "free rent" but this is a husband and not a roommate you're talking here, and if anything goes south, at least the house and equity is all yours. I don't know still if I'd be willing to do that either (I could see getting really resentful really quickly over the lack of help keeping a roof over our heads), but that at least brings it in the realm of "not totally insane".

Marriage/ AOS Timeline:

23 Dec 2015: Legal marriage

23 Jan 2016: Wedding!

23 Jan 2016: "Blizzard of the Century", wedding canceled/rescheduled (thank goodness we were legally married first or we'd have had a big problem!) :sleepy:

24 Jan 2016: Small "civil ceremony" with friends and family who were snowed in with us. December was a bit of a secret and people had traveled internationally and knew we *had* to get married that weekend, and our December legal marriage was nothing but signing a piece of paper at our priest's kitchen table, without any sort of vows etc so this was actually a very special (if not legally significant) day. This is in no way predictive of your own timeline if you filed during or after April 2015, unless CSC develops a backlog. A backlog is anything above the 5-month goal time listed on USCIS's site

I have to agree it must all be staged. I know Jon and I have discussed sending some money back home when we works just to help out his mum who only has her pension to live on but we already discussed the amount and have a plan in motion for that. It is really hard to believe that this never came up before. They hinted at it previously in one of the older episodes that he was the main one paying the bills so I am pretty positive that they talked about it before.

The one thing about Loren is I can understand her reason for crying. I know that I still feel pangs of guilt when I think about Jon leaving his Niece and Nephew who love him so much behind. They miss him when they don't get to see him after 3 to 4 days let alone only going back to see them once or twice a year once everything is settled.

As far as the other couples I haven't really formulated much of an opinion other than Mark seems to act like he isn't ready to have someone in his life since he is so set in his ways... I only hope they can work that out.
