Getting a Texas License

There seems to be conflicting answers on the forum, so I'm not sure what to do.

I entered the U.S. June 28, 2015 and got married on September 1, 2015. I got my license on the same day, and received a Limited Term License that expires September 25. Well, that was pointless. I had no idea that I couldn't receive a permanent one. I guess I should've done my research. I also surrendered my license from Canada.

I have already received my I-797 Notice that my Permanent Residency application is in process. Is that good enough to renew it or do I actually need my green card? Some people say that the work permit will work as well. I won't be getting that for another 3 months. I am basically license-less at the moment which sucks for living in Texas. If anyone knows if the I-797 works, do let me know!

Thanks!

Unless you are planning on driving before than or for the purchase of alcohol but you can get an ID which is separate from the driver's license instead if you really need an ID.

the I-797 and driver's license are used for different things.

You were not specific on what you are trying to do.
