how do you buy clothes on-line all the time? I can't even figure out what size I am when I got to the store and try stuff on! Every item I try, it can be labeled the same size, and yet they never all fit the same. I have had such a time trying to find clothes I like here. I'm always reduced to tears when I go out. :(

Hi Mags,

Good luck on your immigration journey. Hey, I remember you, from the message thread that I started about people living in a small town! Likewise, I can understand your situation, as I too live "in the middle of nowhere/small town" and when I came over I only had two weeks of spring/summer clothes (hey, who knew that a two week vacation here would be instead a lifetime here of living in the USA). So I had to buy the rest of my clothes here. Hey, what better reason too for a new wardrobe, than to celebrate a new life here in the USA?

From my experience, here are some of my suggestions as to where to find clothes:

1) Walmart. www.walmart.com. Yes, they are located everywhere closeby to almost every small town, and you can even order online too. You'd be surprised at just how much new stuff you can find at such great bargains! Good ole Uncle Sam Walton....

2) Blair. www.blair.com. Lol...I got some clothes as holiday gifts from there.

3) Salvation Army, Volunteers of America, Goodwill, or local thrift stores. Second hand stuff at great low prices. Can be found in many small towns.

4) Also check out local yard sales, garage sales, bazzar sales, community sales. Second hand stuff at great low prices. Can be found in many small towns.

Hope this helps.

Ant

Okay, I've been here nearly three months and need more clothes. Drawback is...I live in the middle of no where and I can't drive to any major shopping centres.

So...online it shall be.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a decent, reliable, online clothes shopping website? I'm looking for casual stuff really. Jeans, sweatshirts etc etc (I've already tried GAP btw!).

If you can help, I'll be your slave forever... :P

Mneh, I'm in the same situation, but I've been lazy and asked my mum to send me clothes from Topshop... I just can't seem to find a shop that I like here, and I do not understand the sizes at all. I'm pretty tiny, a size 8 in the UK, and apparently that equates to a 4 here or something, but it never seems quite right when I try stuff on... Anyway mags, amazon.com is actually very good for clothes, I bought some sports stuff from there and I got some really good deals. I also ended up buying a handbag, some shoes, a dvd or three.... beware of online shopping! It's just too easy!

If you have a bit more $$ to spend try luckymag.com and go to their web shopping guide. They have quite a long list on online places with nice stuff which is a bit more individual than the usual homogenous stuff. Most of them have sale pages with bargains, of course. Away with the tapered leg. ;)

check out www.coldwatercreek.com. Their stuff can be a bit pricey but I usually watch for their sale/outlet items. I think the quality of their clothes are better than chadwicks.

Take a shopping excursion!! :D

I actually quite like Gap, and Banana Republic too.

FYI, Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy are all owned by the same parent company, they just price and market their wares to different sectors of the economy.

The major dept stores aren't bad either JCPenney, Macy's etc. tho their non-sale/discount prices tend to be a bit steep.

Sept 2005 engaged in USA, Dec 2005 married in Australia ;)

Apr 2006 completed DCF in Sydney, May 2006 emigrated to USA, Aug 2006 started new job

Jul 2007 finally had wedding, Dec 2007 moved into our first house

Jun 2008 our son is born, now just waiting for I-751...

Hey mags....with the costs of shipping and possibly return shipping if it's not what you want....have you thought about making a day trip to the closest city to do a bit of shopping?

The nearest cities either way are Terre Haute or Indianapolis, both at least an hour away. I don't drive and there are no trains/buses etc. So I'd love to go shopping but it isn't entirely practical at the mo. Once I get a driving license it'll be okay...until then, it's the local Wal-Mart or online! :D

If you're a 14 or above (a UK 16), try Lane Bryant. Their clothes are well-cut for women with, shall we say, curves.

:star:

Make sure you're wearing clean knickers. You never know when you'll be run over by a bus.
