Hello

Goals from this post:

- Brazilian citizen move to the US

- receive sponsorship from company prior to arrival?

Question:

So the situation looks like this. My girlfriend was an Au Pair for a family in my town and lived here for a year on a J-1 visa. She already has her bachelors degree in Psychology from a top University in Brazil. She is now back in Brazil and has been looking for ways to move back here, ideally for much longer time. We don't want to jump into the spousal visa process just to have her to be able to come to the U.S.

Now what we are focusing on is finding a job that will provide sponsorship so she can come into the U.S. for a longer period of time and we can be together. What we need help with is 1) Is this a viable option or the correct way to go? 2) Is it possible for her to find a job that will provide sponsorship without her being in the U.S. yet?

If there are any ideas you have or best steps to go about this please please please let us know! We have been trying to figure this out for a few months now and we can't figure out the best course of action to get her back here.

What sort of job is she looking for? Obviously anything psych related will need US certification exams

In essence, as long as she has a US company to sponsor her, sure she can pursue a work visa

good luck

I think the best bet is to find a company in Brazil that has international offices in the US. That way they could provide a transfer visa. She could also go for a domestic service visa (i.e. nannying). I don't know too much about it, but I think those would be the easiest (aside from a K-1 or CR-1 which would require you to be in a very serious position!).

Getting an H1-B is incredibly difficult to obtain. There are plenty of skilled people in the world with degrees, from US Universities of places abroad competing for that type of visa. There are only 65,000 available nationwide, and 20,000 for those with a Masters degree. There is a lottery held for the past few years since at last count there were 233,000 applicants! This also only happens in April. At that point it really is luck of the draw.

Does she just have a psych degree, or also experience in the field? What specialty?

She should probably check with specific healthcare recruitment companies; I know there are shortages with speech and OT therapists, and visas can be gotten for such, maybe psychs too if she has sought-after experience/ specialties.

Do her Masters in the US?

She has did her clinical research in behavioral psych, but from looking into it she would need to do a lot of work to become certified to work in that field here. We looked into masters programs as well, but the exchange for real to the US $ is so bad right now it is out of the question. At this point we are just hoping we can find any job that would allow for a transfer visa (though the job market is so extremely poor in Brazil right now - recent grads aren't expected to land jobs for over 9 months) so that is another thing we are thinking could be impossible. Our thought right now is to both go for our masters in europe where tuition is extremely inexpensive and after this time together if we get married coming to the US together will be a little easier. If not we may end up in Brazil.

Well the only thing that comes to mind is another au pair gig?
