Moving forward, applying for a SSN and Work Permit

Hello all! Well my fiance arrived Stateside Friday the 18th and it has been such a blessing having him here. I can't even explain it! But we would love to start moving forward on getting him a work permit and a social security number. Can anyone walk me through those steps?

Your timeline states you filed for a K1 visa. You have to first get married then file for AOS with application for EAD and AP.

Congratulations! Give him a week to get settled and then you can go to the neatest social security administration building and apply for his social security number. You have until his 90 days are up to do it but I'd say the sooner you get it done the better. Check out the guides for AOS. We had time before the wedding so we prepared all the AOS papers prior to the wedding. Then we got married, got our license, and submitted all the documents the week after the wedding. We just made sure to date everything after the wedding. But check out the guide. There's even one about getting his social security number (which he can do as soon as they get him in the system and doesn't have to be after the wedding).

The fees for the I-765(EAD-work authorization) and I-131(AP-advance parole for travel) are waived when filed with a pending I-485, so include both of those too. It takes about 60-90 days to receive the EAD/AP combo card, which will allow you to work(along with an SSN) and re-enter the US when traveling abroad while waiting for the green card approval.

You need all the supporting documents for each form as well, so read the instructions for each one. You can also search here on VJ for what to include with each form if you get stumped. There are also example forms here on VJ you can look at when filling out the forms. They can be helpful.

However for work permit (EAD) and Advance parole documents, they cannot be done before marriage and as someone else mentioned, you can apply for them free of charge when filing for his Adjustment of Status (AOS).
