Hi, I entered US with K1 visa in Kentucky.

I got married, applied SS Card(waiting for them to mail it now) and am preparing for AOS now.

I have a question.

After I get my SS Card, can I get a drivers license? or Do I need to wait till I get GC?

As people have noted, having a SS card works. My husband was actually able to get his FL DL with just his AOS paperwork, but that was less certain than if he had had his SS card.

I bet it depends on the state and even the agent you get. Good luck.

I have no idea, nor do I live in KY.

I would not rush into driving until familiar and truly comfortable.

Never heard of Intl DL but seems more short term oriented vs immigration.

If you fully intend on a local KY DL, I wouldnt want hassle of changing back/forth and dealing w/ paperwork more than already have to for immigration. Being insured and covered w/ the intl DL...etc.

True! Here in Alabama they did not accept my ''SS card or EAD or AOS paperwork'' They wanted to see the real ''Green Card'' -_- Anyways I went back this may and they accepted it and I passed my written test and road test in less than 20 minutes. Good Luck!

I believe it varies from state to state. I am in PA and was allowed to drive with my UK Driving License accompanied by an International Drivers License for up to a year. I passed my US test within 6 months knowing that if I needed to do a second take for some reason I would need to fit that into the single year I had.

I don't know how it compares to Japan obviously but the US driving test was worryingly easy to pass compared to the UK driving test.

Best wishes

Laura

Most states allow driving with a valid International Driver's License, although the terms may vary. Go to the Motor Vehicle website for KY and search on International Driver's License. You should be able to find out what KY's regulations are.

Every state is different as said above. In Ohio you can drive legally for up to one year on your countries valid drivers license.

I am in Illinois and twice, I have tried to get my drivers licence, at two different DMV's and been rejected because you need a green card. Apparently its a new law put in place just recently. I tried showing a marriage certificate, social security etc anything but they kept at it, nope you need a green card.

Still have my Australian licence so I'll just keep driving on that.
