Police raid Berlin mosque as 'Isil' jihadists try to recruit refugees

Police raided a mosque and several apartments in Berlin in the early house of Tuesday morning as German intelligence warned Islamic extremists are trying to recruit Syrian refugees flooding into the country.

“We are very concerned that Islamists in Germany are trying, under the cover of humanitarian assistance, to exploit the situation of the refugees for their own ends and to proselytise and recruit among asylum-seekers,” Hans-Georg Maassen, the head of Germany’s domestic security service, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (BFV), said.
But he said there was “no reliable evidence” that jihadists are infiltrating Germany masquerading as refugees.
Mr Maassen was speaking after police carried out a series of raids in Berlin targeting suspected recruiters for Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (Isil).

An imam was led away by heavily armed police after dawn prayers at one of the city’s mosques, and questioned over allegations he had instigated his followers to travel to Syria and join Isil.
The 51-year-old imam, a Moroccan citizen named only as Abdul Qader D under German privacy laws, dismissed the allegations as “completely absurd”. He was later released without charge.
The raids were also carried out in connection with an unnamed 19-year-old Macedonian citizen believed to be currently in Syria with Isil, according to police.

There was no link to a terror attack in Berlin last week in which a woman police officer was stabbed and seriously wounded, they said.
It was not clear whether there was any connection between the raids and concerns refugees are being targeted by recruiters.
The number of Salafists – adherents of a radical branch of Sunni Islam – in Germany has risen sharply in recent months, from 7,500 in June to 7,900 this month, the BFV warned on Tuesday.
“Salafists want to establish an Islamic state in Germany,” Mr Maassen said earlier this year.

One of the country’s best known Salafist preachers has published a list of suggestions for his followers on how to approach refugees.
Pierre Vogel, a former boxer and convert to Islam, advised his followers to volunteer to help at government refugee shelters, and to take gifts and donations with them.
If the offer was rejected, he told them to seek out refugees at nearby mosques.
Mr Vogel has publicly denounced violence and terrorism as contrary to Islam, and denies links to jihadist groups such as Isil.

But in June police arrested a suspected jihadist in a house where the preacher had been living, and there are claims he may have met with another alleged jihadist shortly before he travelled to Syria to join Isil.
“The warnings that Islamists are recruiting for jihad in refugee camps keep piling up,” Eva Kühne-Hörmann, the justice minister in the state of Hesse, told Spiegel magazine.
“Especially young, unaccompanied refugees are in their sights.”
Germany is continuing to allow genuine refugees into the country, despite reimposing border controls some nine days ago.
The authorities have attempted to slow the flow to prevent shelters being overwhelmed, but border police say those who want to claim asylum and can prove their identity are still allowed to cross.

According to reports from the border, identity checks are rudimentary and many migrants from other countries claim to be Syrian in the hope of getting in – even some who are obviously African.
There have been concerns jihadists might attempt to enter EU countries posing as refugees, but Mr Maassen said so far there was “no reliable evidence” to back those fears.
The BFV is thought to believe it is not a particularly likely scenario, as Isil has enough money to provide its members with false passports and air tickets direct to major European cities.
On Tuesday the German rail operator Deutsche Bahn said it was suspending key services from Austria and Hungary because of the border checks.

Personally I think the topic deserves more than a snide one liner.

1) Are there legitimate questions about some of the people trying to claim asylum? Without doubt.

2) Are there legitimate refugees fleeing the violence in Syria? Well unless one denies that there is a war going on over there I don't see how that can be denied.

I dont know about you but i object to the implication from a few of the people here that because of (1) its ok to suggest that there are no legitimate refugees and that no one should be granted asylum.

When there are legitimate questions about some of the people trying to claim asylum then it is the basic job of those tasked to protect the people in the countries where these refugees are going to err on the side of caution.

Right now it does not look like that is happening.

Lebanese education minister Elias Bousaab, who met the Prime Minister during his lightning visit to the region, said the extremist group is sending trained jihadists ‘under cover’ to attack targets in the West.

If true, it could mean up to 400 of the 20,000 refugees Britain has promised to accept by 2020 have been radicalised.

Mr Bousaab said the extremists choose targets, including children, in refugee camps and schools before trafficking them into Europe via Turkey and Greece.

He added that Isis is posing a worsening threat by ‘growing and mushrooming’.

Asked if Islamic State was sending its members into Europe under cover, the minister said: ‘My gut feeling is yes they are facilitating such an operation.

‘Yes of course to go to Europe and other places. You may have let’s say two per cent [of refugees] that could be radicals.’

He said most travelled over land through Turkey to Greece.

Mr Bousaab added: 'I would say anyone who works together to combat Isis this is the solution because Isis is growing and mushrooming.

‘It’s becoming a danger because they are recruiting kids from schools, they are recruiting everywhere.

‘It’s a very dangerous situation and the world should wake up and do something about that
