Cr1 visa holder with ssn card dhs authorization only

So confused!! POE 09/19/2015 My spouse has a ssn with the dhs stamp on it since he was here on a exchange program in the past. We requested another card on the visa application but we know it is a 50/50 shot it will come in the mail. My question is: Can he work with his CR1 visa & stamp with his current card? Would the visa be considered authorization? He went to the SS office today and they told him to come back when he had his green card and they would issue another one. I understood that his visa is his GC until the physical one comes in the mail.

Will he have a problem working? PLEASE HELP!
