I completed my DS-160 form in order for me to get my interview booked (I have my medical exam on 9th October) but I do not have a color photo of myself on my laptop. I scanned my passport photo but it is in black and white. I can't scan it in color.

Does it have to be a professional passport photo or can I get a friend to take a picture of me with a white background with my face neutral for the application? Would that be acceptable? I can crop it so it is that of a similar size to a passport photo but I need to know if this would work or not.

Please help! I am so close to getting everything sorted but just have this small hiccup.

If it's for the DS-160 we didn't upload one and just brought them with us. If you don't upload one it just has a silhouette and says you must bring an extra one with you for the DS-160. We had physical photos but not a digital one, so that worked for us. As far as your other question, if your follow the rules of what the photo must be...how would anyone know whether it was a professional service or a friend who used a white background? You would be fine with your friend doing it.

The US Dept of State provides a photo tool to help you make your own. http://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/passports/photos/photos.html

We have used it for Embassy, AOS, and new passport.
