i'm definitely going to take a look at Lufthansa seeing as a lot of people are recommending them, their flights seem pretty cheap aswell!

how are pets managed with Lufthansa when it comes to connecting flights? will they take care of that for me?

Hahahhaa I am so sorry. It is just the way USCIS has shaped my thinking, i feel nowadays if you want to bring anything to the US, USCIS has a form you must file. I am afraid in 10years you might need to file a form with supporting documents to bring your home country ATTITUDE to the United States of America.hahahahhaha..???

We brought our cat from Bulgaria to the U.S. in 2013...CBP didn't even look at her paperwork or take her out of her carrier (she was a cabin animal). They laughed at her name (Meow-Meow), but that was it. We put a LOT of time and effort into getting her pet passport done correctly, got her chipped, spayed, vaccinated, a whole load of paperwork, and like ten cumulative hours on the phone with the airline and CBP, and they didn't even look at her at the airport (Detroit).

Kind of a let down. :P

We flew with Delta.

Though I should add, when they see you're coming from the UK, they will probably do the same as they did with us. I guess they figure if the UK will allow your animal to live (since they are insane with pet import requirements; we had to go through those when being stationed here), you're good.

You have two ways to bring your cats to the US - they either travel on your same flight as "excess baggage" or they ship as "freight". If you CAN, use the excess baggage route, as it is MUCH cheaper. Also, this means the cats are traveling with you and you can bug the flight crew about checking to see if they are on board and if they make connections.

If your cats have to change planes, that creates some additional headaches - especially if you are changing from a non-US carrier to a US domestic carrier. If you are going to be living anywhere near a big hub (Chicago, Miami, New York, Dallas, LAX or SFO), it may be better to go ahead and just terminate your flight at the hub, and then drive to your final destination.

Some carriers have a limit of how many animals they can carry on a flight - so all the advice about checking with airline is great. You will need to get certified carry cases for them. They must be able to sit upright without hitting their heads on the top of their case if they are traveling in the baggage hold.

If you must ship them freight, I HIGHLY recommend JetPets. They handled my cat from Brisbane Australia to New York, with a transfer in LAX! Because I was transiting via Hong Kong, I was unable to send my cat home as excess baggage. Hong Kong would not handle the transfer.

Best of luck. Having your kitties with you is fabulous!

Yes all airlines that I know of take care of everything you don't have to worry about that. :) Great Cheryl if a fountain of information :)(L)

Hahahaaa I know my brain is no longer he same but they say once this is over you get it back but you have to file a form for that and I think it's a $550 fee which would be well worth it hahahaa SOB's it just never ends. :P to them. :joy:

I have chinchillas, so my cats also had to go freight when I moved back to the US from the UK. I used http://www.animalairlines.co.uk/ They were wonderful and took care of everything, even the carriers, except the passport and medical certificates. And you do need a passport, it proves to your new vet in the US what vaccinations/tests. It will make your life much easier and prove other non-immigration vaccinations which are required in many states like FVRCP, etc.

My wife and I are bring two of our dogs to the USA we have all their shots upto date and will obtain a health certificate and fitness to fly certficate before we leave plus export certificates).

We are planning to fly turkish airlines with 2 hour flight from here to Istanbul, about 90 minutes between flights and then about 11 hours to Chicago, is 90 minutes enough time for them to take care of the dogs between flights? We will make sure they have food and water in their crates as much as we can.

I have read some airlines won't fly 40" / 100cm crates because they are too big does anybody know if this applies to Turkish Airlines. We would fly other airlines but the delays are crazy.

Price wise I believe from Georgia to Turkey is 5 euro /kg so 150 euro per dog, and from Turkey to the USA is $150 flat rate per dog.

Does this make sense?

I flew Turkish Air from Egypt to California but my lay over was 7 hours but I must

say they seemed very efficient and the Airplanes are right there so there should

be no problem. I would suggest you go to their office and ask them if 90 minutes

is enough time. I say in person because in Egypt no one ever picked up the phone

so we couldn't contact them about the rescue I took to his forever home. I literally

had to have the person in charge of adoption call from Germany to get every thing

ready to go and the reservations for the cat.

All I can tell you is that one cat and carrier under 8 kg was $160 and we had

to pay cash they did not accept credit cards at all. It was a nightmare for me. Oh and

it had to be in their (country specific) currency. Hope this helps you and

congratulations and safe trip to all of you. :)

You can also go on their website and it will say how much it is if you want to make sure

that way, but it seems right to me. :)(L):joy:
