Man claimed God told him to 'slay infidels' at ETX church

(KETK)

Authorities say a man who was arrested for making threats against an East Texas church, allegedly did so citing God as the reason for his actions.

On Sunday at 2:10 p.m., the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office received a call from the Corinth Church located on FM 346 near Lake Palestine.

The caller said an unknown black male was wearing a camouflage helmet, camo pants, tactical vest and boots entered the church around 2:00 p.m. The caller also stated they could see what appeared to be a pistol in his pocket. The man was later identified as Rasheed Abdul Aziz, 40, of Flint.

According to the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office, witnesses said the suspect appeared distressed and stated he was a man of Islam, and that God had told him to "slay infidels." Several parishioners brought Aziz into a room away from others at the church while another person called the Sheriff's Office.

Before law enforcement arrived at the scene, Aziz left the church and headed north on FM 346 into Smith County. Cherokee County Sheriff's Office notified Smith County and Cherokee County deputies remained in the area in an attempt to locate Aziz, who was not found.

Cherokee County deputies returned to the area several times in an attempt to locate the suspect, and returned to the Church between 6:00 p.m. and 6:20 p.m., in case Aziz returned during evening service times.

At about 6:45 p.m. Cherokee County deputies again responded to the church due to a report from a passer-by about a vehicle matching the suspect's vehicle description seen leaving the church, headed north into Smith County again.

Smith County was again alerted, and deputies from both departments searched the area, but were unable to locate Aziz.

At around 8:20 p.m. Smith County reported they had Aziz in custody, resulting from a call they responded to on Beautiful Hills Drive in Flint, Texas. According to the Smith Count Sheriff's Office, the suspect was found inside thte Pine Trail Shores subdivision.

At this time, Smith County has charged Aziz with unlawful possession of a firearm.

Cherokee County is currently gathering further information on the initial incident at the Corinth Church, and criminal charges are expected to be filed through Cherokee County within 24 hours.

Aziz was arrested with an illegally-acquired Taurus 9mm pistol and what appears to be at least two 12-rounds magazines and 70 rounds of ammunition.

That the left wing media ignores stories that don't fit their agenda .....

While your OP situation sounds like it was frightening for the parties involved, it also makes it pretty clear that not much happened worthy of a national news coverage blitz. A man with a gun (yawn) had a break from reality and heard God (interesting a little bit) and scared some people in a Church. Where is the national news interest in this case?

Presumably:

1) He is black.

2) He said infidel.

Ergo it is proof of a terrorist attack.

Convinced? Me either.

and chrisitanity always appears to be so peaceful and loving..lol

A man is in custody after he allegedly shot his girlfriend, his baby boy and a preacher at a church in Alabama this morning, police said.

The alleged shooter, identified as 26-year-old James Junior Minter, entered the Oasis Tabernacle Church in East Selma and sat between a woman and an infant in the front row, according to the Selma Police Department.

The gunman fired shots at the woman, and when a preacher grabbed Minter, the preacher was also shot, police Lt. Curtis Muhannad said.

Witnesses subdued Minter and took the gun, he said.

Minter was identified as "the boyfriend of the female victim and father of the infant victim," the police department said.

A possible motive for the shooting may be over "child visitation and ongoing domestic violence between the couple," the police said.
