Hey guys I am going to apply for the 2017 dv when it opens. I have some questions about it though. So if I apply and win because I might get lucky would I need a american citizen or permanent resident to sponsor me ? I just finished high school and I know that is the minimum requirement but in-case I won how would I actually convince the consular officers that I will not be a public charge (my parents can support me). What do you think are good places to actually immigrate to especially for someone interested in studying college or university ?(other than the southern states nothing against them).I think I can start Community college establish residency then transfer to a good university.

I know I this sounds crazy but I am feeling lucky and am I am just playing the scenario in my head if I get lucky. I understand dv is random but I have heard stories that were stranger than fiction and sometimes people get lucky.

Btw I want to thank SusieQQQ and other members here that have helped clueless people like me understand the process and made it easier for us. Thank you for helping us, I mean to answer others questions and share your experiences with us means alot, lots of people forget others when they achieve something or keep things to themselves . God bless you all and may you be successful in your life and good luck to those who are in the process of getting their visa and those who will apply for DV 2017 and also those who who got their visa I wish them all the best in finding employment and a happy life.

If your parents can support you durning your time period of attaining an higher education, why are you applying for a DV visa, why not a student visa?

What a strange question!!! Because there are all sorts of conditions attached to a student visa, like restrictions on working, and of course there is no automatically staying afterwards. Plus green card holders are entitled to certain benefits and financial aid that non-immigrants aren't. Etc. Why would anyone not want a green card instead of a student visa if they are looking to start a new life in the US?!

Yeah, if you've just finished high school and have no savings, there is a good chance you'd need an affidavit of support.

And if you do win there is plenty of time to come back and figure out suitable states, etc :)

Than Susie to answer your question, his post was all about going to school in the US, many foreigner have started their lives in the US as a student, than worked to obtained a green card. Since this is a child who is trying to find a way to reach a dream, it would be easier to start on the journey in a manner that could offer him security, that he didn't have to walk the path along because his parents was funding him.

As a parent of a young adult, I realized that at the age of 18 or 19 they are not able to make good judgements.

His post was actually about wanting to win the DV, and then how to go about the logical next step in his life once he has moved there, should he win. His parents can fund him anyway, and/ or he can apply for the financial aid that he would qualify for as a permanent resident, and this way he has more not less security as he can also work for himself, etc, plus he has greater options about his future - I'm sure you know that not everyone who studies in the US manages to get a green card afterwards.

Like Susie just said my post is all about wanting to win the dv then how to go about the next logical step. A student visa is not very safe like a green card if anyone had the choice they would obviously go for the green card as it more security for you. Btw do you know how difficult it is to actually get a green card after studies in the us? My parents can fund my right way but if I have a permanent residence I am eligible to financial aid and can work which is good I believe that way I can depend on myself more and lessen the financial burden on my parents.

Plus student visa is actually a temporary thing , you do know when you apply for it and get the interview they require you to prove your home ties so that they make sure you would leave after you finish your studies. Also think about it this way how many international students study in the us and how many are studying masters and have phd if they give green cards so easily I would surely not be eligible they will select the talented students and the ones who are highly qualified and the number of these students is alot . Like I said in my earlier post if anyone wants to immigrate to the us and gets a choice they would opt for the green card, I mean what is not to like you can live and work permanently and then after 5 years get naturalized and become a us citizen. As long as I am eligible to apply for dv I will do it why not I won't lose anything an if I win I get to win lots of things and most importantly build a better future for myself.

Thank you for your help Susie.

Does it normally take this long to make an announcement? Or is this the first time. I have no insight to years prior but I'm just curious. If it's taking long to make an announcement for the opening date, what if there's no lottery this year?

There will be a lottery. Its in law and the law needs to change for them not to have it. It's not unusual for details to only be available in second half of September so they should be soon. Lottery is open minimum of 30 days for entry.
