No SSN after 3 months of applying

My wife arrived in the US in May. We applied for a SSN in June, after we got married. It's Sept and we haven't received any information from the SSA office. We went to a local office because no information would be given over the phone. At the local office, an officer said that homeland security hadn't gotten back to them about my wife's immigration status.

Is anyone else experiencing this long wait time? I thought it would take two weeks to get a SSN. What can be done to get this to move a long faster?

Thanks!

Which name did you use when you applied for the SSC? If you applied in her married name, they may be having problems finding her in the SAVE database as that would be her the name on her VISA or maiden name. I would go back and apply again with the name on her VISA. You can change it using the Marriage Certificate once the SSC has been issued.

Hi Dave,

We used the name on her Visa to apply for her SSN. And there was no name change when we got married.

Not sure what the problem is.

It is quite strange because my fiance now husband applied two weeks after his arrival in USA and got his card two days later.

Yes! We experienced a similar process. We married, waited 3 weeks for the marriage paperwork to go through, thinking it would be easier since my husband changed his name. We went to the SS office, did the paperwork, waited FOUR weeks (as it said on the paper), went back (having moved in the meantime) and the man at the new office said that he saw our application and that it was "stuck". He resent it, and we got the SS card 2 weeks later.

I don't know if it's because of the name change/moving, but it shouldn't be. I wish we had gone in 2 weeks after we didn't get it..you lose the time and the trip in, but if your application is "stuck" like ours, you might gain 2 weeks by having them unstick it.

Thanks Daisy Chain! Gonna go back to the office to investigate.

I thought you couldn't get a SSN card until your AOS case is approved! So what documenst did you guys present to get a SSN card before getting your green card?

That's a good question for Daisy Chain!

We presented the visa, passport and I-94, and we brought everything else in case they were in competent. Make sure they take a copy of the I-94!

Just be sure they get a copy of the I-94. The first time we went, they didn't take a copy and the second time they needed one. (????)

Soooo we finally GOT the SSN! I had to contact the office of the regional director because on our 4th visit to the local SSN office we were still told that the I-94 expired and they couldnt process an application. The regional director's office contacted the manager for the local decatur office who contaced us. We made an appointment. We got helped by a compitent employee who couldnt understand why several staff memebers and supervisors kept saying that the expired I-94 was preventing us from applying. We were told that the visa expiration date is what determines elegibility to apply. Luckily for us we were a week away from the visa expiration date. It took less than two weeks to receive the SSN. And btw, we received the travel doc and work permit just a few days apart. SO HAPPY to get this far. Thank you everyone for your input and time! God bless!!
