told to WAIT for SSN! Help!

Hi all,

Just came from a frustrating morning attempting to get my SSN at the administration office. I did everything I read on this forum, waited 14 days (business days), went to the office with my passport and CR1 visa. The person helping me said that I wasn't in the system yet, and I should wait until I have been in the US for 3 weeks. I told him that technically we were on the third week, in which he replied that I had to wait until next Monday just in case it's still coming in the mail.

I asked him to check the SAVE data base using my name and alien number, and after some skepticism he said that I still wasn't in the system.

Should I wait until Monday to try again? or should I wait longer as I am not in the system yet?

Any recommendations would be great. Thank you--a lot is riding on me getting my SSN as soon as possible.

My wife ran into a similar situation. Her I-94 was under the old paper system. It took CBP six (6) weeks to input my wife's data into the SAVE database! As you can imagine, we were fit to be tied, but as we found out there is little that you can do until CBP does their thing. They are a bit of a shadow organization, and attempts to contact them, to coax them to input the data was useless. Hang in there, I hope that you don't have a six week wait. You are correct, the SSN opens up a lot of doors for the new immigrant.

Good luck on your immigration journey.

Thanks faithfulblu. I just tried to check and it said that there were "No cases found that match the search criteria."

Am I in for a long wait? And should I wait until I can actually see my case in SAVE before going to get my SSN at their administrative office again?

Thanks again!

I am very curious for this answer as well. My wife is in the same boat. She has a job offer, but cannot start until she has her social. A lot riding on her getting that ssn.

YOu can also check it yourself. If you find it.. Print it out and bring into the SS office.

That is because you must register to use the SAVE database and to quote the USCIS:

"Before you can start using SAVE to verify the immigration status of benefit applicants, you need to register your agency and determine if it is eligible for access.

To qualify to use SAVE, your agency must be a federal, state or local government agency or licensing bureau that provides a public benefit or license, or is otherwise allowed by law to engage in an activity where the verification of immigration status is appropriate.

Click here to review your agency type and eligibility."

Or you must have an active case and the system must be functioning. The case check system is not guaranteed to work correctly so take it with a grain of salt. I would expect my wife's case to indicate complete or some such as she has her SSN, but I also get a notification that there are no cases.

Thanks Dave&Rosa. Would you recommend I still go to the SSN office tomorrow anyway as the clerk had suggested to me on Thursday? I don't want to head there and then have the same situation happen to me again.

Thanks so much!

  • 2 weeks later...

Just an update if any one is still waiting. I went it with my wife to the SS office on 22nd. The guy said to apply for the ss and that it wouldn't affect any check box that I had put down on the visa application. So we went ahead and did it and 4 days later, the SS came in the mail. good luck to all

Good news everyone! I went to the social security office again and thankfully got a different clerk who helped process my application. I went on a Monday and got it by Friday! WHEW! Thanks for all your help!

I'm curious to know how long have you and your wife been waiting for her SSN? And do you advise waiting the 3 weeks or going to the SSA office and applying soon after POE?

Well we didn't wait 3 weeks. We went exactly 11 days after POE. part of the reason we went so quickly is because my wife was starting a new job and we couldn't afford To wait that long. In our case it worked fine. I would say if you don't have the urgency then wait and see. We took a risk and in our case it paid off

Well in our case we may have to act quickly as in the state of Georgia you need to apply for a Ga driving license no more than 30 days past POE; and in order to apply for a license you need to have a SSN. Plus, my wife is eager to look for work when she arrives.
