also, jail time doesn't mean anything to someone hell bent on killing innocent people and taking their own life as the cops close in.

Gun crime happens here and most of the time with stolen guns... In order to protect the children give them 10 years per stolen gun maybe even 20. you folks want to penalize lawful gun owners. and go soft on the folks that do the crime.. Do a crime with a stolen gun .. life in prison without parole ....

The liberal elite ... know that the people simply cannot be trusted; that they are incapable of just and fair self-government; that left to their own devices, their society will be racist, sexist, homophobic, and inequitable -- and the liberal elite know how to fix things. i don't want to penalize lawful gun owners, where do you get that idea?

i'm just saying that a long jail sentence isn't a deterrant to someone who wants to kill and commit suicide.

as a taxpayer, i feel like it is more productive to create an air of responsibility around gun ownership, requiring insurance of gun owners and a national registry. that's it. no gun grab. just an easier way of tracking some of the weapons in this country.

i don't even believe that convicted felons should be kept from ever owning guns, or vote for that matter.

i also don't believe that 4.5 years in prison is going to keep this lafayette man from breaking the law again when he gets out. that's where social support and education would step in..if there were any to speak of..you know rehabilitation? not just - hey, you're in timeout - make the pic some $$$$.

When you buy a gun it is a requirement certainly in my Stats to have it recorded, background check etc.

State issue, not Federal.

State issue, not Federal.

why do people not want a federal registry, outside of being afraid the federal government is going to use the registry to take their guns?

i've never understood that. if the government wants something from you, they're going to get it. they don't need a list.

Obviously there is a great deal of distrust, but the way the US was set up basically the States should be in charge of most things apart from certain common issues such as Foreign affairs and Interstate issues.

Now admittedly the Feds have since day 1 been on a power grab.

It could be a question of practicality. For example, you have an FBI because what used to happen before was that criminals could rob a bank in one state and hide from prosecution in another.

ok soo, now trump wants national conceal carry.

would only make sense to unify the registry.

or is trump ultimately pulling a power grab?

In a 1,105 word policy paper released today, Trump claims support for nationwide concealed-carry permits, an end to bans on certain types of guns and magazines, and—presumably in response to the Chattanooga shooting in July—the arming of employees at military recruiting centers.

Trump also makes a vague commitment to overhauling “our mental health system” so that mass shooters are flagged and treated before they act. His support for mental health reform appears not to stem from an interest in protecting potential victims so much as it does from preventing lawful gun-owners from catching flak. “And why does this matter to law-abiding gun owners?” he writes. “Once again, because they get blamed by anti-gun politicians, gun control groups and the media for the acts of deranged madmen.”

Trump’s allegiances on gun control have changed over the years, much like they have on nearly every other issue. In his 2000 book The America We Deserve, the candidate wrote in support of bans on “assault weapons”—exactly the kinds of bans he’s decrying now. “I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s Internet technology we should be able to tell within 72-hours if a potential gun owner has a record,” he wrote.

Law abiding gun owners get blamed for mass shootings because many of them refuse to consider any form of gun control and hide behind BS arguments about how proliferation of firearms has no connection to incidence of gun related death and crime.

And that's before you get into the whole hunting for sport thing.

Number of guns have gone up.

Number of incidents have gone down.

On your word eh?

gundeathauto.JPG

Notice that deaths fell since the 90s and have been climbing only slightly with population increases.

By the way, gun deaths won't go above car deaths, because we are seeing a surge in auto deaths in the last year or so..

To the point of background checks and registry. The checks are national now the debate regarding universal checks is more about private party transfers. If registry isn't required, i'm ok with it on the condition that a person can buy out of state. (Before a national system, they limited guns to in state purchase only because one state didn't have records of another. I find the out of state FFL purchase more of a limitation than universal background check).

With regards to registries, they don't work and yes they lead to confiscations that are not lawful. Then the person has to fight red tape that is far tougher to get through than USCIS even.

Canada gave up on long gun registration because it didnt work and it was expensive to maintain.
