Lafayette man gets 4.5 years for possession of stolen guns

A Lafayette man was sentenced to four and a half years in federal prison for possession of eight stolen guns, the Justice Department announced Sept. 15.

Rico King, 39, was convicted of one count of possession of stolen guns, a charge he was arrested for in September 2014, in a Louisiana federal court. He pleaded guilty to the charges in May. Once he finishes his prison sentence, he’ll face three years of supervised release.

According to court documents, authorities were able to track him down by tracing a number of stolen firearms. After arresting three men sitting inside a car near and suspected of burglarizing a house, they learned where a number of stolen guns were. They then executed a search warrant at a house were King was an occupant.

During the search, authorities found a .26-06 caliber rifle, two .25-06 caliber rifles, a .410 gauge shotgun, two .12 gauge shotguns, a .22 caliber semi-automatic rifle and a .270 caliber rifle. Victims of the burglaries reported all eight firearms as stolen.

In an interview after his arrest, King told investigators that he agreed to hold onto the guns for one of the men who stole them in exchange for a television. Investigators said they had reasonable cause to believe King knew they were stolen guns.

Instead of requiring a person to lock up their firearm how about say a 10 year sentence per stolen firearm if you are found in possession ..Lock this fellow up for 70-80 years .

25-06 is an old Remington caliber.

It's very, very high velocity. Good round. Like the 22-250, it's more to a varmint rifle.

You seriously never had a 410 when you were a kid?

OR are you making fun of .25 and 410 gauge? LOL

The 25-06 is an excellent cartridge that provides excellent ballistics and trajectory for varmint through deer sized game. The 25-06 shines as an ideal duel purpose varmint and deer rifle. The 25-06 has ballistics, trajectory, and wind bucking ability that is among the very best varmint only cartridges available. The 25-06 as a dual purpose cartridge has the advantage of being quite capable of shooting bullets as heavy as 120 gr. bullets. The 25-06 is an excellent choice for Whitetail, Mule Deer, Antelope, and similar sized game. I would prefer something larger for large Black Bear, Elk, Moose, and other tougher critters

Secondly, putting someone away for that length of time would seem to put an unnecessary burden on the taxpayers public. 10-15 years, sure - but 70-80? You literally would get less for murder.

You want to solve that gun problem right ? 10 years per gun sounds about right. Your solution is take away the guns . only have a 10 round mag, roster guns in California and it goes on and on . I have read where come counties in NY State if you desire more than 5 firearms on your CC permit an officer will come to your home to make sure you have a gun safe .

If you have five (5) or more guns, you must bring two pictures of your gun safe: one of the safe open and one of the safe closed.

Why do I have to purchase a gun safe if I desire to own more than 5 guns if I lived in that county of NY. state? .. Some one may steal them ...

. My solution lock them up for a long time . Folks desire to lower gun crime .. Stolen guns seem to be a large part of that problem . Make it so ... Stolen gun ..... Not touching that.. Put them away for half their life .

I think when you live in a country with the largest proportion of the adult population in jail I think you need a more joined up approach than "heres a new crime, bang them up for 100 years and throw away the key".
