A bit old fashioned?

30-06 can be used for bear too - 220 grain bullets. although probably best to not use for any bears other than black bears.

Deer or Elk, we need to buy over the counter so probably by Vail or maybe Alamosa.

Howa Alpine has caught my eye as well.

Great country out there. Spent a week in Denver and surrounding areas at the end of June. Loved it, except for the traffic and congestion in Denver. Got to do a lot of driving with a national car club event.

Annoyingly I live in one of the top areas which makes it difficult getting a tag, locals have no preference. My friend has enough acres to get one or maybe more as a landowner but forgot to put in on that basis. Think you need to apply around Christmas.

Mule Deer, my friend swears by 30 06 which he has used for many years taking down Elk over 1000 lbs.

I just remember the bruises I got from .303 at School.

Walking the dog the other day, coming back in at dusk and there was maybe 16 Elk, my Puppy decides they need chasing.... Off he goes. Fortunately he ignores Moose, they look mean.

25-06 is a good caliber, although i have my doubts about it for anything larger than deer/elk. it's a wildcat cartridge based on a necked down 30-06 round. had a 25-06 and while it is a flat shooting round (moreso than a .270) it is more expensive per round due to it not being as popular as a .270 or 30-06

I went an had a look at the ammo stocked in one of the big box stores as I was thinking of Swede or Creedmore, only a couple of options for both, loads for 308

I recommend popular loads as recommended. Ease of getting ammo can be important. My stepfather shot a few elk in colorado. He had a 7mm.

Most of the popular big game calibers will do the job. Shot placement is the most important IMO.

Here is an example. In the past I have taken two shots at deer with a .17 HMR with a 17 grain bullet. Both shots were between 50-75 yards. I shot the one between the eyes and dropped it dead. The other I shot it behind the shoulder. It only ran 50 yards before it died. If you have held a .17 HMR round…..it is amazing that it could kill a deer so quickly.

30 06 and 308 are only marginally more powerful than 303. I really like 303 and have a WW1 SMLE from 1916.
