Ok yeah, so I have flown before, 8 take offs and landings. This still dosen't stop me from being nervous each time. I did find a free fear of flying online course that I took that helped take the edge off. I was so nervous I was starting to get hives last week.

My first flight out of Corpus is full, not one empty seat. on an itty bitty rubber band engine plane. (at least it felt like it the last 2 times I flew on it!) the seating is all weird

Second leg of the flight I thought would be a little easier but I see it's quickly filling up! :crying:

What do some of you guys do to help keep calm on a plane? (drinking is out.)

Valium. Failing that take a good book and think happy thoughts.

Nah, don't have any valium, I wish though. I used to take Xanax and that worked like a dream. but now, no medical insurance :(

Got any Ambien?

Take those for the transoceanic bit and you'll sleep like a baby.

I never look out the window on take off or landing. Makes me want to throw up if I do.

I used to love Ambien! but now all I have are the CR's and they don't work as well for me. :( First time I ever looked out the window ever was on the last flight I took on that rubber band engine plane. It wasn't as scary as I thought, But then after 2 dramamine and a klonopin nothing was scary!

I used to be afraid... now all I do is sleep :)

Yes, I hope I can just knock out as soon as I get on that big plane, I want them to have to wake me up when we are at the gate! 'Ma'am, you have to get off the plane now, everyone's left! We've been here an hr! This plane needs to go back to the United States!'

Wouldn't be worth it on the itty bitty plane since it's only an hr flight, I hope the dramamine will help keep me calm on that one.

Vicky.....lol....let me tell you a funny story....

The first time I ever flew to Wes was the first time I had ever flown....ANYWHERE. I had to go from Pittsburgh to Chicago then Dublin then Donegal. Pretty ballsy, eh?

Anyway, I get on the plane at Pittsburg (PS I had no fear of getting on the plane - I was more concerned with being an unescorted female in the airports) and I'm all cool. Buckled in and we take off.........vroooooooooooom.....I'm looking out the window (and I have a BIGTIME fear of heights) and I'm thinking.....WOW this is cool! Look at all that down there.....oh look at all the cars and houses and.....oooooooooooooooooooooo......look at how everything seems like its moving and ....oooooooooo.....I don't think I like this.....bleeeeeeeeeeehhhhhh.

I turned my head...looked again.....turned my head....looked.....bleeeehhh...shut the blind closed my eyes......I could feel the damn plane rocking......I was like.......Oh ######.

I landed in Chicago and called Wes. 'Hey baby how was your flight'.

"I'm turning around and going back....no way can I do the rest of the trip".

LOLOLOLOL

Anyway, by the time I made it on the all-niter to Dublin and got myself refreshed, I was looking out that window on the teeny plane to Donegal ALL THE WAY. What a sight to behold that beautiful irish countryside!

And....almost forgot.....when I did awake on the big flight....the girl next to me had raised the blind, pointed and said 'Look'....I could see the irish coastline. Breathtaking. First thing I thought of was my son and how I wished he could see it also.

You'll be fine. Just get 'mothers little helper' and you'll be great!

Planes are safer than cars. I usually fall asleep on the taxiway.

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Oh yeah, I'm not nervous about crashing or anything like that. It's more like once the door shuts, that's it, I'M TRAPPED AND I CAN'T GET OUT :help: I can't exactly step out onto the wing and get a breath of fresh air. I've been diagnosed with agoraphobia so it's also the crowds that makes me so nervous. I'm also a huge emitophobe so I am terrified someone will get airsick around me. :crying:

I usually don't get nervous with turbulance, but the first rubberband powered plane ride flew thrugh a storm so I was pretty near tears befor the flight was over.

Okay, first of all, relax! It's just a plane ride. Statistically speaking, it's much safer than driving in your car everyday. The only reason airliner accidents are such big news is because they happen so infrequently. You have to remember, the news will sensationalize anything, especially disasters.

Next up...you're flying on a regional aircraft, used by Continental Express (an Embraer RJ-145). Try to get an "A" seat, if you can. This way you don't have to sit next to anyone. Sure, the seats are sort of cramped if you're broad-shouldered like I am, but it's nice having a seat all to yourself without someone next to you.

On an ERJ145 (and most regional aircraft) you'll have to gate-check your carry-on. There's barely enough room in the overhead bins for a small briefcase or laptop bag, let alone a full rollaboard. Gate-checking isn't bad though. The gate agents will tag your bag and when walking up to the aircraft, you'll leave your carry-on there for them to stick into the hold. You'll get it back again once you de-plane. If you have any regularly checked bags, those will progress to your next flight, provided they were tagged correctly when checking them and have all the airport IATA codes on them.

Which airport are connecting to within the United States? I know you can't very well fly to another country on an ERJ.

I normally fly out of Houston (IAH) and connect either in Minneapolis/St. Paul (MSP) or Denver (DEN), depending on the airline I'm with at the time. I've flown Continental (including Continental Express), Delta, Northwest, and I will be flying United (including United Express/Skywest) come May.

People were getting out the airsick bags :( I am such an emitophobe!

I travel a lot on business and when I'm not working on my laptop, I'm sleeping. Some trips, it's the only decent sleep I get! I can fall asleep before we leave the jetway and usualy wake up when we touch down again.

Find something to keep your mind occupied... or take some Nyquil!

A great marriage is not when the "perfect couple" comes together.

It is when an imperfect couple learns to enjoy their differences.

It could be worse...you could be on a turboprop! I was going to fly with Air Canada, until I realized that I'd have to take a turboprop between cities. I don't mind the regional jets so much (I still prefer the larger jets, of course), but there's no way I'm going on a turboprop!

On my last trip in Canada, I actually had to fly on a single-engine propeller-driven seaplane -- twice! Of course, that was for all of about 10 to 15 minutes too. My fiancee, having done that before, didn't think much of it, but I wasn't too sure about it; after all, I was used to the larger 737 and Airbus models.

If you're really nervous about flying, then I'd recommend going to one or all of the following message boards:

Personally, I think the first board on the list is the best, but then I'm biased since I'm also a member of that board. ;)
