You only need to prove you have APPLIED for a Social Security number to be hired.

Providing you have employment authorization, of course.

You know, luckily Rey now has a good job, but for awhile we were getting worried because people kept saying for the first two weeks (he started his job search early!) that w/o an SSN it would be a problem hiring him. I would consider that discrimination based on national origin, personally!

Well, I can't say I would consider it discrimination based on national origin.

They are just saying a SS number is needed to work. And that's because the employer is required to deposit taxes under the employee numbers.

I received a letter from SS on Friday (basically a receipt), indicating that I applied for a SS card and should be getting it in 2 weeks. I'm glad this didn't drag out any longer. Next stop driver's license. :)

05/26/2009 -- Received NOA (NOA date May 15, 2009, guess they aren't deporting me).

05/29/2009- Biometrics Notice date

06/01/2009- Received Biometrics Letter

06/18/2009 - Biometrics

09/23/2009 - date of decision to approve (letter received), just waiting for card. No online updates whatsoever.

I bet it doesn't even take that long. My husband had his number just a day or two after he received the letter.
