Does anyone know how this process works? Apparently SS couldn't verify my immigration status and now they need to verify it manually. Shouldn't I already be in the system seeing as I applied for AOS over 2 months ago?

Yes, SS Office is so unbelievably ridiculous !!! I had my EAD card last Dec 2006. But until now, they're still in the process of validating my EAD at the Immigration Office. You need to wait at least 9 weeks and request for SSN.

Geez......................I guess I just need to wait ...............some more. Eventually I'll be able to get a driver's license and finally register my car.

You cannot get your SS# now. You can only get it within the first 90 days (until your visa expires) or after you receive your work authorization!

I know that, because we went to the SS office last week and tried to change my name on the SS Card and they told me that they cant verify my immigration status and i have to come back, when i have a document (greencard or work authorization) showing my status

Took me three or four goes to get a ssn. First they wouldn't give me one, cause they just wouldn't, no matter how much I told them I am supposed to be able to get one, I was on K1 and still had enough validity on it. Then I couldn't get one, can't remember the reason why now. Then I went back after getting my EAD and STILL had to wait more than two months to finally get it. Cause USCIS hadn't updated the system and it had to be done manually.

EAD approval date was actually 27th October 2006, as stated on the card, received ssn, so I could work, January 22nd 2007.

2-28-2009 Sent in I-751

3-14-2009 Received I-751 back because they can't read

3-16-2009 Re-Sent I-751

3-17-2009 Received by Vermont

Waiting and watching the calendar flip ever so over closer to 4-2-2009 (When my 2 yr GC expires) . . .

4-2-2009 Received I-751 back AGAIN! Oh and my GC expired today.

4-3-2009 Re-Sent I-751

4-4-2009 Received by Vermont

4-6-2009 Date of NOA-1 Extension Letter (Rec'd 4/13/09)

4-10-2009 Check Cashed

4-24-2009 Date of Biometrics letter (Rec'd 4/30/09)

5-11-2009 Biometrics Appointment in Louisville.

Here is some useful info on SSN verification....

When an alien requests an SSN or replacement/corrected SSN card, SSA will verify his or her documents and current status with the appropriate Bureau of the Department of Homeland Security. If the initial verification is not available through the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements (SAVE) system, SSA may need to send Form G-845 for manual verification.

Note: If the applicant has changed his/her name after an immigration document, i.e. I-94, was issued, e.g., married and is now using the married name, but has not obtained a corrected immigration document showing the new name; this is not a name discrepancy for enumeration purposes, i.e. SAVE clearance, if the applicant can provide an acceptable legal name change document to establish the new name.

The 14 day status expiration limit for assigning an SSN and/or issuing a card applies even if an individual submitted his or her application before being within the 14 day period and entered the 14 day period while waiting for his or her status to be verified.

Note: For applications submitted after 01/06/2007 SSA offices can submit an additional electronic verification request, that in most cases eliminate the need for a Form G-845 to be sent. The Brooklyn, NY Card Center has on site USCIS verification.

If your status does not verify through the initial SAVE request be sure that the secondary request has been made and return to the SSA office no more than once a week to see if the SSA office has received a response from the secondary verification request. Be sure to take your document whenever going into the SSA office.

All cards are mailed from Social Security Headquarters in Baltimore, Maryland to the postal address provided on the application.

Try doing a search on MDYoung posts, he usually had all sorts of very useful links for social security. It is too bad he doesn't post any more. :(

This is weird but, my husband applied for his SSN the day after he got here (a job interview wanted him to have applied) and the card arrived in less than two weeks. We returned a week after he applied anyway to ask about the SAVE system and they had no idea what we were talking about. They said they verified everybody the same way.

I don't know why they can't standardize this system, for the love of gawd

I went to apply for SSN the next day I got my EAD. First, they sent me back home because they said they needed my birth certificate. I came back the same day with the birth certificate. Then, they verified in the system and said I was not there yet and recommended me to come back the next week.

I came back the following week and gave me a letter that says "This is to show that you requested a Social Security Card on February 6, 2007. We cannot issue you a Social Security card until we check the documents you gave us to show your citizenship or alien status. We will check the documents with the agency that issued them. This will take about four weeks"

I have no notice of my SSN card yet.

Yeah, I have the same letter :( . Hopefully it won't take them 4 weeks to confirm my status.
