no matter which way you look at it, the school handeled the situation poorly. kid should have never been arrested (similarly, the poptart kid shouldn't have gotten in trouble). america has a problem with juvenile discipline in public schools - shocking - considering we have a multitude of problems and blatant injustices in our adult 'justice' system/pic.

but yeah, lets look for examples of kids bringing actual bombs/guns and think really hard on all the possible lives that could have been lost over the years since columbine/911 (interchangable really)..all because this kid DIDN"T build a bomb and had zero intention of killing anyone.

With the amount of paranoia that kicked off that got the kid arrested, not to mention in the peanut gallery here - I guess it's a good thing that the education system didn't respond to the likes of columbine by arming all teachers.

Ahmed might have got his head blown off rather than being arrested.

yeah, that's exactly why i've always been against arming teachers.

for a group so concerned about the children - they should be going after the teacher who didn't get all the kids the hell away from the bomb immediately - out the school. of course, when i brought this up to lib, he has nothing to say. he knows well and full that the premise is "it could have been a bomb" so any mishandling of ahmed as a criminal - or illegal questioning carried out by police of a minor can safely land back on "but but it could have been a bomb"

(b) An offense under this section is a Class A misdemeanor

Yeah.... Sure.

Soibds like a waste of public money to me. Punishing kids for being kids. Can you say police state?

Might as well rip up the constitution and Bill of rights. Clearly it's just words.

so now you're saying, from the very beginning ahmed was trying to pass a fake bomb off as a clock. he knew the school would think it was a bomb, in other words.

as far as (2) goes, shouldn't the school be responsible? or i guess not, since they didn't go ALL THE WAY with the emergency route...

Again the questions that the School Admin and Police are accountable for:

If it was a bomb..why not remove the device or remove the kids from school?

If it was deemed to be a hoax and a potential felony : Why did the police lie and continue to question him saying his parents could not be there during his interrogation. Why cuffs?

Evidently the Governor has similar questions:

Texas Governor Greg Abbott spoke out today about the arrest of student Ahmed Mohamed, the teenager who was handcuffed for bringing in a homemade clock that law enforcement mistook for a bomb. Mohamed was let go, and unlike the clock, the story really blew up and people across the country shared their support for him.

The mayor of the Texas town where this took place defended how the police treated Mohamed, but Abbott reacted differently today.

According to The Dallas Morning News, Abbott said, “The last thing we want to do is put handcuffs on a kid unjustifiably. It looks like commitment to law enforcement may have gone too far.”

He added that the police didn’t do a good job balancing safety and defending civil rights in this instance.

I'm sure Greg Abbott is an unabashed liberal...    How dare he stand by the Constitution, that old gd piece of paper!

I think Val has it right. If they really thought it was a bomb, the entire school should've been evacuated immediately and the bomb squad called in. My personal opinion is that they talked themselves into thinking it could've been a bomb after they knew it really wasn't, which is why the school was not evacuated.

True... But you would have thought asking the science teacher first might have been worth doing... I mean, if we're talking common sense...

That could cost a lot of lives if it truly was a bomb and the school was not evacuated. Asking the science teacher is something to be done after the threat is minimized. I think the teachers talked themselves into believing it could have been a bomb, but knew there was never a serious threat to the school.
