Excerpt below (but read the whole article)

Gore’s mansion, located in the posh Belle Meade area of Nashville, consumes more electricity every month than the average American household uses in an entire year, according to the Nashville Electric Service (NES).

In his documentary, the former Vice President calls on Americans to conserve energy by reducing electricity consumption at home.

The average household in America consumes 10,656 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year, according to the Department of Energy. In 2006, Gore devoured nearly 221,000 kWh—more than 20 times the national average.

Last August alone, Gore burned through 22,619 kWh—guzzling more than twice the electricity in one month than an average American family uses in an entire year. As a result of his energy consumption, Gore’s average monthly electric bill topped $1,359.

Sounds like a case of "do as I say, not do as I do". Lets not forget all of his air travel in private jets as does Suzuki and Flannery. It is about time these guys curtail their lifestyles and walk the talk.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

Personally I don't discredit what he is doing. I would just like to see these guys walk the walk..

Sure, rich people can be green. Just don't lecture the rest of us unless you are going to live the way you expect us to.

zackly. People follow by example for the most part. And its like when I was a kid and my father would sit there yelling at me "don't drink and don't smoke or I'll brain ye!" while he's got a rye and ginger in one hand and a cig in the other. It really kinda dulls the effect of the message :P

BUT, doesn't mean that just because the "biggest" proponents of the cause don't necessarily follow their own advice means that I should just shrug it off as nonsensical propaganda. Personally I think we all need to make a change, and the sooner the better.

Now...if someone can point me in the direction of Mr. Gore's house, I will go snip some wires :P

Here's a less biased report. Seems Mr. Gore is spending $432 more per month to use solar power.

Furthermore, don't you think it might cost just a little bit more to heat a 10,000 square foot home in winter than the typical 1,500 square footer?

You can't have it both ways. Either the rich should be allowed to be megarich and they deserve every penny OR every person who believes in anything should live in a tiny unheated shack.

they are a complete waste of time and space for civilians, imo. expensive, ostentatious, and resource hogs. one can do the same thing with the average pickup that most of them are used for and still save money and gas. their real purpose is hardly ever realized by the average civilian user.

yes, i can have it both ways. just because someone can afford a 10k square foot home that does not mean they really need every inch of space that comes with it.

imo he's a hypocrite for having such a large house, which includes more a/c and heating. most everyone would be quite comfortable with a 2k square foot house. apparently not him.

I'm proud to say that I drive an expensive, ostentatious, time and space wasting resource hog, but then, there is nothing average about me! :P
