Hey folks!

This might not be a question that any of you have an answer for which is fine! I was just hoping maybe someone that had already crossed the border would know :)

After I move to the USA, when am I eligible for Medicaid?

Also, I did my Consulate interview in Montreal today and I was APPROVED!!!! :D

Thank you to this amazing community for all your help and support. I wouldn't have ever been able to do it without you. <3

Yeah, Medicaid isn't something you're suppose to get on, it's meant for USC's only, but some states give it to LPR's after five years.

Like the above poster said, the whole purpose of the I-864 when you AOS is so if you get on Medicaid, the government could require the person sponsoring you to repay any money that medicaid uses to treat you.

You also aren't eligible while you're on your K-1 visa.

So. short answer, you shouldn't be eligible for medicaid until you get naturalized, so minimum of three years from your AOS, or Five years from when you get your green card if you remain on LPR status.

You'll want to look into insurance through your spouses work or through the government market place or a private insurance.

Here is the marketplace for insurance if your spouse can't provide you insurance via job: https://www.healthcare.gov/

http://cchn.org/ckf/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Immigrants-and-the-ACA-Factsheet2.pdf

^ Insurance info for colorado about immigrants in colorado.

"What are the coverage options available to immigrants in Colorado?

Immigrants and Medicaid/CHP+ Eligibility Citizenship eligibility rules for Medicaid and Child Health Plan Plus (CHP+) have not changed. Most Lawful Permanent Residents (LPRs) must wait five years before they can become eligible for Medicaid or CHP+ (LPRs have been granted permanent resident status or a “green card”). There are several other categories of qualified immigrants who are eligible for Medicaid and CHP+ prior to being in the U.S. for five years, including those with asylee and refugee status.

Immigrants and the Marketplace The Affordable Care Act (ACA) expands eligibility to additional categories of lawfully present immigrants in the new health insurance Marketplaces. For example, those who have been lawfully present in the U.S. for less than five years and who are not eligible for Medicaid or CHP+, will be able to shop and apply for financial help in Colorado’s Marketplace, Connect for Health Colorado. Families, individuals, and small businesses can shop for qualified health plans and see if they are eligible for financial help also known as subsidies, tax credits or Advanced Premium Tax Credits (APTCs), and Cost Sharing Reductions (CSRs). 1"

You won't be eligible for it as mentioned in the previous post. You will need to obtain medical insurance either through your spouse or through the state or federal exchange from the Affordable Care Act (ACA aka Obamacare).

Immigration has put the rules in place so new immigrants don't arrive to the country and immediately receive these type of benefits intended for citizens.

Yup, it's pretty much a safe house to prevent people from coming here and getting nearly free healthcare. If you come in as an immigrant, you have to pay for the healthcare. The only people here that don't are people who are too poor to afford it.

Canada's a lot more friendly when it comes to health care. Lol. It can get expensive here, and you'll be fined if you don't have it every year.

Thanks everyone. :) That totally makes sense and I wasn't aware of that beforehand, that there were direct correlations, but that all makes sense.

I do have the option of getting on my fiancee's insurance once I move and we're married ... I was hoping to avoid that route since the initial estimate was that it would increase her insurance costs by something insane like 300%.

I appreciate all your help, especially Ash.1101 for getting me that info about Colorado!! Thank you :D

You're very welcome!

I figured I'd look since it showed you were going there, some states have insurance for immigrants, but generally they're states with a lot of immigrants, like California!

I can confirm LPRs Colorado need 5 years. Remember it is effectively a loan paid out of your Estate.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

Welcome to America where healthcare cost money - same as Canada except you pay through variious taxes so it feels less painful - in the end it's not much different.
