If any members have stayed at their fiancé's or asawa's home before departing for the US, how did you handle the final goodbyes? I'm sure there will be a lot of drama that morning and was wondering how involved I should get. My plan now is to just stand on the sidelines until my wife has done her thing, then step in to make one final assurance that their daughter is leaving in good hands. Get in the van and pull away. Nice and clean.

Is this the best way? Any other suggestions?

Brass - I think you nailed this one on the head. Give her all the time and space. Be sure to assure her "how she is going" to stay in contact with family. SKYPE, Facebook, FB Messaging or whatever it is that you have set up for her.

I tell you, if the family has internet at their place get them on magic jack and let her call for free and talk as long as she wants. After about 6 months she will be busy and it's less important to keep in touch every day for her.

Your job is not complete. Assure the family she is in good hands, and ride into the sunset. The next 5 plus hours is going to be tough on her. She is going to need a lot of hugs and reassurance from you. I know you got this one.

She will have to tell you everything. If there are problems, do not be afraid to contact the police for help.

Sage advice as always.

I would say the communication lines should already be addressed long before her departure.

I would say the communication lines should already be addressed long before her departure.

They have been for the past 18+ months. Still they are 'losing' a daughter and sister; grand-daughter and niece.

I know it's not going to be easy. Just trying my best to make it as painless as possible.

Skype, FB, MJ and all the other electronic novelties should make the separation substantially less 'final'.

Um, maybe re-read the question before responding. #######: 'contact the police for help'.

Help for what. No need to reply, not expecting one.

While I can not give you advice on your question since my wife flew to the states on her own

I can suggest some things that help my wife adjust and to feel less homesick

Fast internet so she can chat to her family back home and or being able to call anytime. Try to find a Filipino store in your area. If not at least a good Asian store. Try to find other Filipinas in your area. That she can talk too. Buy a good rice cooker for her

I hope some of these suggestion will help

Have a safe trip and a good marriage

All good suggestions and all have been previously accomplished. Not so much concerned about the asawa's adjustment in the US since most if not all of your suggestions have already been accomplished.

I was more concerned about the severing of ties event that will occur in several hours. Right now Dad, younger sis and my asawa are drinking RH and eating balut so I'm hoping this will confirm that I'm not just a crazy American stealing a family member. Mom and Grandmother will probably be a different matter.

We'll see in a few hours.

The family all realizes that their child has exceptional prospects for success, happiness, and fulfillment. It doesn't mitigate the separation anxiety, but with each day and week that passes, the familial bonds will grow stronger and more meaningful as a result of the separation.

Folks here made excellent suggestions. Use Skype and WhatsApp for her to communicate any time she chooses. WhatsApp has a calling feature that is FREE to any country. It works very well and has saved me some serious money whenever I speak with my wife in the RD.

that's a good plan. It will make them feel better knowing she is in a good hands in a foreign land.

FWIW a LOT less drama than I expected. I helped load the baggage into the van and stood by the wayside while the family unit sais their goodbyes, tears included. Wife said it's time to go, walked out, I stepped back in to tell the siblings to study hard, told mom and dad we'll see you on Skype and that was it.

Of course I don't know what transpired after we left. But it was substantially cleaner than I had expected.
