This has been a huge problem for many people. I will just voice my opinion, not directed to anyone, but hopefully it will help.

We "thought" we would wait until after we were married, (K-1 visa) and then go to the SS office. ""What a huge mistake for us!!""

The SS records, had her maiden name in their system, not her married name.

She entered into the USA on her maiden name, (I-94) and that was in the system.

It took 5 trips to the SS office, and a specialist from another office to get it straightened out, and was "after she got her EAD/AP card."

Some people disagree, but I suggest anyone arriving in this country, give it 10-15 days,, then go to the SS office, and get your card. Do not wait until married, after married, a name change is very easy at SS office.

I just speak from our experience.

It wasn't really easy for me to change my name in SSA office. I got my first ssc 2 weeks after I arrived in USA, on my maiden name. That part was easy. After getting my EAD it took me 8 weeks, 2 SSA visits, and several phone calls to change my name. I guess it all depends on your local office.

It all does depend on who you meet I believe, but in terms of getting your driver's license in your married name you can do that by showing them the marriage certificate, my wife's SSC is still in her maiden name while her driver's license and state ID are both in my surname, and she has no problem using them with her social just explaining that she has gotten married and hasn't gotten around to changing the name on SSC.

Then secondly, in regards to your name on your green card and passport being your maiden name, when travelling with your children if you have any or plan to have one before you change it, make sure you take the child's birth certificate and marriage certificate with you if your husband is not travelling with you.
