Buying a one-way ticket?

Hey everyone!

Just a quick question. I've always thought through this process that even once I have my K1 visa and I'm travelling to the USA to get married, my plane ticket should still be a return ticket because the USCBP (Customs and Border Protection) are not comfortable with people that have one-way tickets, bus/plane etc.

Does anyone know if this is true and if it is advisable to get a return ticket even though I certainly don't plan on using it?

It makes no difference for a K-1; buy whichever is cheaper.

Technically, a K-1 is dual-intent.

With K1 the assumption and intent is that you are coming to stay. My fiancee used a one way ticket, it was just a little over half of the cost of a round trip ticket.

Buy whatever is cheaper but make sure to cancel the return flight (to be taken off the passenger manifest) if you get a round trip ticket, so they

don't think you left the country. This has caused issues for some people with AOS.

RFE : June 12, 2015 for income not meeting guideline. Income does ( ! ) exceed guideline.

RFE response : June 26, 2015 returned with a boat load full of financial evidence.

UPDATE: July 5, 2015 updated on all 3 cases, RFE received June 30, 2015.

Service request : Aug 12, 2015, letter received that it will be processed within 90 days from receipt of RFE.

UPDATE: Aug 24, 2015, EAD card being produced/ordered. ( 102 days from AOS receipt day and 55 days from RFE response received.) Thank you Jesus !

Emails : Aug 24, 2015, EAD approved, EAD card ordered.

I-797 EAD/AP approval notice received : Aug 27, 2015

EAD/AP combo card mailed : Aug 27, 2015, EAD/AP combo card received: Aug 31, 2015

Sept. 21 Interview, 2 hour interview, we were separated and asked about 50 questions each for an hour each. IO was firm but professional, some smiles.
Several service requests made, contacted Senator and Ombudsman. Background checks still pending.
July 21, 2017 HOME VISIT.  Went well. Topic thread in AOS forum.
Waiting to skip ROC and get 10 yr GC due to over 2 year while pending AOS
AOS APPROVED Oct. 4, 2017 * Green card in hand Oct 13, 2017 !!!!!

First K1 denied after 16 month of AP. Refiled. We are a couple since 2009. Not a sprint but a matter of endurance.

100% agree

I have never had issues with buying one way tickets, I have often bought one ways each way because I find a good deal and it ends up being cheaper. They aren't going to know unless they ask anyway. If you are going on a K1 there would be no reason to buy a return.

The only reason is price imo. Just depends on how tight on money you are/will be once you're going.

My fiancé got her k1 packet at 3pm in the Philippines. I then purchased for her a one way ticket to America and she was on a plane at 10:00pm that night. We have now been married almost 6 years and she in an American citizen.

No issues with a one way ticket even purchased the same day.
