Leaving for the US in a week and have a couple questions about my car and SSN

1. I can't import my Honda because it didn't pass the vehicle clearance. Can I still bring it across and use it for a while? I think I've read I can do this for up to a year. Do I still use my Canadian auto insurance? I'm assuming I keep my Ontario plates?

2. What's the first thing we need to do after I cross? It looks like I wait about 2 weeks to get my SSN and go from there right?

#2 - get settled,get unpacked - get the wedding done! Not sure whether you're the mail or female in the equation, if the male - you can head down to SS after about 2 weeks, but I'd give it a little longer, you need to be in their system in order for them to process your application, the worst that will happen is they won't be able to find you and you can come back a few weeks later and retry.

If you're the female (as I was) AND intend on changing your last name post wedding, I'd wait to get your SSN until after the wedding - then you don't have to revisit to change your name post-wedding

Yep - I mean - people go to get married in Vegas or New York or wherever from out of country so not everyone who gets a marriage license has a US SSN

SC requires a SSN to get married, GA doesn’t and would take my AB driver’s license, so we got married in GA.

From what I’ve read on-line today, Ohio is one of the states that is requiring a SSN.

You're right; it is. I just looked it up. I can't get used to the idea that things are so different state to state, so I guess we could look into getting married in another one. With him being an Ohio State fan I already know my SO won't get married in Michigan LOL

I still need to deal with my car. Anyone? Please?

Here's what might be said about #1 - youa re activating your K1 meaning you're moving permanently - you won;t be back to Canada until you have AP or a GC which is a few months.

- I would call your Cdn insurance company right now and see what they say about insuring your car once you are no longer a Cdn resident...I believe they will say no and your insurance will expire fairly quickly after moving.

- I would call the US Border folks to find out whether you can even bring that non compliant car - you may be able to for a certain period, I think I recall other people not importing their cars immediately (in your case you can't I gather since its not compliant) and they were allowed to still drive it across.

- if you have no Cdn insurance, you would need to figure out how to have American car insurance - not sure how that would work on a non importable car

OK, I called my insurance company this morning. I can leave my Canadian insurance and still be covered fully as long as I leave everything as is. I'm living with my dad right now and have been for about 4 months and had everything changed to that address like my license, insurance, etc. As long as I don't get an Ohio driver's license and continue using my Ontario one I'll be fine. I said I was going to return to Canada after my adjustment period (4ish months with early parole right?) and settle everything up ASAP and will likely sell the car then.

I know once I get my Ohio license I won't be able to get US car insurance anyway because my car isn't compliant so I can't register it.

The question now becomes can I drive with my Ontario license in Ohio for that long. I'll still have my Ontario address as my dad will still be living there.

There's so many things to think about when moving to a new country!

check with your state. Some will say it's good for a year, others will say 30 days to change licences.
